Number plates of vehicles: ‘AP’ to ‘TS’ in four months?

Newly crowned transport minister, While this sudden move is likely to affect all motorists with an ‘AP’ registration, the most affected would be the 35,000 new vehicle owners who only recently fixed their two/fourwheelers with the foolproof High Security Number Plate (HSNP). This was done in compliance with an order issued to this effect by undivided AP’s transport ministry, about seven months ago. For owners with vehicles registered before December 2013, the HSNP deadline is December 2015. Records available with the transport department suggest that there 73 lakh registered vehicles in Telangana of which 35,000 currently have the HSNP, which they bought, post the government directive. While the price of a HSNP for a car cost Rs 625, two-wheeler owners had to cough up Rs 250 per person. Now, with the minister adding a ‘rider’ to the earlier order with a new directive on ‘TS’ number plates, these motorists have no choice but to abandon their expensive HSNPs and spend more money on fixing a new number plate. This, especially because transport offi cials have given no assurance on offering exemptions or absorbing the additional cost for replacement, for these vehicle owners. Apart from owners, Reddy’s statement shocked RTA officials too, who rued how it took them anywhere between 7 and 10 days to fi x each vehicle with a HSNP. On Wednesday, they were at a loss of words and didn’t know just how the entire process of replacing the number plates of 73 lakh vehicles could be complete...

AP to TS: district codes also to change

Web technology will come to the help of vehicle owners who have to change the vehicle registration numbers after the State code was changed from AP to TS. The Transport Department is coming up with a solution in which it will host the old number and the new number on its website ‘www.telangana.transport.gov.in’. The number will have a new State code of TS and the district code which will be in numerals. The vehicle owner can access the page using the engine/chassis number as the password and take a printout, which will then be the proof of the changed number and get the new number plate. However, if the owner wants to get a new smart card, he would have to pay a nominal price. Notification in a fortnight According to Transport Commissioner M. Jagadeeshwar, the Legal Department is scrutinising the draft notification for reassignment of registration numbers. The final notification is to be issued in a fortnight or so and then vehicle owners will have to change the number. Only the State code from AP to TS and the district code (2-digit number) will change and not the second series of two alphabets and the last set of four numericals. However, there are exceptions such as Hyderabad district for which the district code - from TS 09 to 13, will remain the same as now. Time to be given He said adequate time would be given for change of registration plates and the owners could probably opt for the new High Security Number Plates, for which the deadline is December 2015. There are...
