About Tukaram Gatha: Tukaram Gatha is a Marathi language compilation of Santshreshta, Jagadguru, Tukaram Maharaj’s works, likely composed between 1632 and 1650. Also called Abhanga Gatha, the Indian tradition believes it includes some 4,500 abhangas. The poems considered authentic cover a wide range of human emotions and life experiences, some autobiographical, and places them in a spiritual context.He includes a discussion about the conflict between Pravritti – having passion for life, family, business, and Nivritti – the desire to renounce, leave everything behind for individual liberation, moksha.About Sant Tukaram Maharaj:Sant Tukaram Maharaj also referred to as Santshreshta, Jagadguru, Tukoba and Tukobaraya, was a 17th-century Hindu poet and sant of the Bhakti movement in Maharashtra, India. He was part of the egalitarian, personalized Varkari devotionalism tradition. Sant Tukaram Maharaj is best known for his devotional poetry called Abhanga and community-oriented worship with spiritual songs known as kirtans. His poetry was devoted to Vitthala or Vithoba.

Saint tukaram's temples were mainly situated in Dehu. Dehu near pune is primarily known for its association with Saint Tukaram, a towering figure in the annals of india's religious history. His legacy is particularly manifest in this part of India. There has arguably been no better practitioner of Abhang form of devotional poetry. There are quite a few temples in Dehu bearing the tag of Tukaram. I visited the Tukaram Janmasthan Mandir, the home in which he grew up and the Tukaram Gatha Mandir(memorial).All of them are set on the backs of the Indrayani River which flows through Dehu. Post-monsoon,the river made for a good sight, full and flowing. On a off-day,it should be easy to find a spot on the bank of the river and spend a fulfilling hour or so. There are numerous syringes withing the temple to Lord Ganesha, Vitthala, Lord shiva and others in the pantheon. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Birth and Childhood: Sant Tukaram Maharaj was born in the 17th century in Dehu near Pune, Maharashtra. His birth year was either 1598 or 1608. His full name was Tukaram Bolhoba Ambile (More). Kanakai and Bolhoba were his mother and father. His father was in a money-lending business. His family was also involved in agriculture and trade. Sant Tukaram’s parents were devotees of Panduranga. It is possible that because of them, he was attracted to the devotion of Vithoba. His parents died when he was a teenager. Tukoba had two brothers named Savji and Kanhoba. What was the Caste of Sant Tukaram Maharaj? Most probably, he belonged to the Kunbi caste, but per some scholars, he belonged to Vani (grocer) caste. Married Life: Sant Tukaram had two wives named Rakhma Bai and Avalai Jija Bai. He had a son from his first wife named Santu. His first wife and son died in a famine of 1630-32. This could have been the turning point in his life. The death of his loved ones had a deep impact on him. He became an introvert and started meditating on the hills. It is possible that during the contemplation, he might have discovered the true meaning of life: devotion to God. It seems he recovered from the mental shock and was involved in day-to-day activities afterward, but he was completely transformed. He married for the second time to Avalai.
