Huge Crowd For Palkhi Procession In Dehu, Tradition & Fervour Reverberate

PUNE: The palkhi (palanquin) of Sant Tukaram Maharaj began its journey to Pandharpur from Dehu on Monday amid chants of ‘Dnynoba’ ‘Tukaram’ and ‘Vitthal, Vitthal’. The temple town, which is situated on the Indrayani river, saw large a large number of warkaris after a two-year break caused by the pandemic situation. People from all walks of life and age groups, including children, were present. The atmosphere in the town was spiritual. As per tradition, trustees of Jagatguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj Temple trust performed pooja at the newly inaugurated ‘Shila temple (holy stones) at 4.30am. Thereafter, they performed pooja of Narayan Maharaj who is believed to have started the procession centuries ago. After completing the ‘kirtan’ between 9am and noon in the ‘kirtan mandap’, the temple closed for a few hours. “The procession began at 2.30pm inside the temple. The ‘paduka’ (footwear) of Sant Tukaram are carried in a palkhi (palanquin). Thereafter, the representatives of the dindi (a group of pilgrims) took the palkhi outside the sanctum sanctorum and completed a round of the Lord Vitthal-Rukmini temple before halting at Inamdar Wada,” chief trustee Nitin More said. The procession will resume on Tuesday morning and halt again overnight at the Vitthal Temple in Akurdi. On Saturday, Nitin Gadkari, the Union Road and Highways Minister, conducted an aerial assessment in Maharashtra along with MP Ranjit Singh Naik Nimbalkar to evaluate the progress of two palkhi margs being developed by the Centre. Both routes have been designated as national highways These palkhi roads are known as Sant Tukaram Maharaj Palkhi Marg, which links Dehu with Pandharpur, and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Palkhi Marg, which connects Alandi and Pandharpur, and have both been designated as national highways. In November 2021, the foundation for the project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The development of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Palkhi Marg will take place over five phases, while Sant Tukaram Maharaj Palkhi Marg will be finished in three phases. Pune: The chants of ‘Gyanba Tukaram’ and ‘Vitthal Vitthal’ reverberated in the air as the Sant Tukaram Maharaj palkhi (palanquin) procession began its 21-day journey from Dehu to Pandharpur on Saturday. The atmosphere in the temple town had turned spiritual as the procession witnessed massive participation from warkaris (pilgrim sect). As per tradition, the trustees of the Jagatguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj Temple trust performed ‘pooja’ of Sant Tukaram at the newly inaugurated Shila temple in the early hours, followed by the Narayan Maharaj ‘pooja’, which is believed to have started the procession three centuries ago. After completing the ‘Kirtan’ between 9am and noon in the special enclosure, the temple was closed for a few hours. District guardian minister Chandrakant Patil, Maval MP Shrirang Barne and other politicians performed a pooja at the sanctum sanctorum before the start of the procession. Sanjay More, one of the trustees of the temple, said, “The procession began at 2pm in the temple where the ‘padukas’ of Sant Tukaram Maharaj were carried in a palkhi. The procession carrying the Sant Tukaram palkhi began its annual journey from Dehu to Pandharpur on Saturday. The procession will stay put in the temple town of Dehu on Saturday and reach Akurdi in Pimpri-Chinchwad on Sunday morning. After an overnight halt, the procession will leave Akurdi on Monday and reach The Sant Dnyaneshwar palkhi will leave Alandi for Pandharpur on Sunday. This palanquin will also reach Pune by Monday. Meanwhile, in a first, the Pune city police have prepared a special web page to give live updates of the Sant Tukaram and Sant Dnyaneshwar palkhi processions. During a press conference on Saturday, commissioner of Pune city police Retesh Kumaarr shared details of the web page “diversion.punepolice.gov.in”, which will provide updates about the palkhi procession through GPS.
