How Uddhav Thackeray has surprised all as Maharashtra Chief Minister in 2 years

Express News Service MUMBAI: On November 28, 2019, when Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, with no administrative experience, took oath as the 18th chief minister of Maharashtra heading a three-party coalition government, many including his critics as well as close associates were not sure about how he would negotiate the governance challenges as well as walk the political tightrope. As Uddhav completed two years in office on Sunday, both critics and supporters agreed how deftly he has handled these challenges and marked his stamp at the national level. Not only did he successfully manage a crisis of gigantic proportions like Covid-19, with Maharashtra being among the worst affected, he has also so far safeguarded the Maha Vikas Aghadi government from BJP’s alleged attempts of toppling. ‘Efficiently handled Covid’ Professor Surendra Jondhale, who teaches political science at Mumbai University, said Uddhav has surprised many with his efficient handling of the Covid situation. “During the pandemic, he never raised any rabble-rousing Hindutva or sentimental non-issues that Sena is known for, but focused on good governance. His address at the state programme was a hit with the middle class and earned him a good name. Now, the immediate challenge before him is to retain power in the BMC polls,” he said. Jondhale said Uddhav has also showed his mettle in maintaining the delicate balance between all three MVA partners with varying ideological. “He has maintained good relations wit...

'Felt tricked & hurt’: Why Uddhav chose to resign before facing floor test

The first indication that Uddhav Thackeray submits his resignation from the post of CM to then governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, on June 29, 2022. (File Photo) A coup was underway, and a Thackeray could not afford to appear defeated was his logic when he first broached the idea with his party. Uddhav Thackeray, however, was not just the chief of the Shiv Sena but also the head of a coalition government. Sharad Pawar and other MVA leaders prevailed upon him to stay on and fight. Over the next week, however, a steady stream of Sena MLAs, some of whom he considered as insiders, continued to leave. Most prominent among them was Uday Samant, part of his crisis management group, who also defected to join Eknath Shinde. As his circle of confidantes grew smaller and smaller, Uddhav felt tricked and hurt, says a senior leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT). Read | “He was hurt by the way a majority of the MLAS had turned against him without any dialogue.” On June 29, when the Supreme Court refused to stay then-governor BS Koshyari’s directive to take the floor test, Uddhav felt he had had enough. By this time, 38 of his MLAs had switched sides, a sufficient number to beat anti-defection provisions. Only five people knew of this decision: his wife Rashmi, his sons Aaditya and Tejas, and Sena leaders Subhash Desai and Anil Parab, who later informed others in the party. That day, Uddhav Thackeray held his last Cabinet meeting where he thanked his colleagues. No legal advice was sought and neith...

Amit Shah's challenge to Uddhav and jibe at 'Cong shehzada' Rahul Gandhi

Union home minister Amit Shah said Rahul Gandhi should ask party seniors before making 'insulting' comments abroad. "On one hand, PM Modi ji is getting respect from the world and on the other hand Congress shehzada Rahul Baba goes abroad and insults the country. Rahul baba, you do not know that no one takes internal politics outside. But you can ask senior Congress leaders about it. Rahul Gandhi does not say this here. But when he goes abroad he says that in the country no one listens to him," Amit Shah said. On the issue of Sena versus Sena in Maharashtra, Amit Shah said the real Shiv Sena got the bow and the arrow symbol defeating the one which betrayed the BJP. "I was the president of the party. Devendra Fadnavis and I went to talk to Uddhav Thackeray. He agreed that Fadnavis would become the chief minister if NDA gets the majority. But then, he betrayed the BJP and allied with the Congress and the BJP for the CM's chair," Amit Shah said. “Today I want to ask Uddhav ji to clarify your stand on Triple Talaq. If you have the courage, then clarify whether you agree with Ram Mandir, on Uniform Civil Code, on Muslim reservations. The BJP does not support religion-based reservation, but Uddhav Thackeray should say what he thinks on this,” Amit Shah said. “Uddhav ji says we made his government fall. But Uddhav ji, Shiv Sena leaders left you because of your anti-party stand; because they didn't want to be on the same page with Sharad Pawar's party,” Amit Shah said.

‘Surveys show Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena poised to get more seats than BJP-Shinde group in BMC poll’: NCP leader Speaking in Nagpur at a two-day NCP conclave, Ajit Pawar said there was “a sympathy” for the Sena (UBT) faction in Mumbai city due to the manner in which former CM Uddhav Thackeray’s tripartite MVA government was toppled last year June 04, 2023 08:45 pm | Updated 08:51 pm IST - PUNE While it was the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) aim to take control of the cash-rich Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar on Sunday said that surveys showed that his ally, the Speaking in Nagpur during a two-day NCP conclave, Mr. Pawar, the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly said there was “a sympathy” for the Trying too hard “It has been the BJP’s dream for many years to come to power in the BMC. Everyone knows that when the [undivided] Shiv Sena under Bal Thackeray took control of the BMC decades ago, it was only then that the party began to expand in the Konkan region and other parts of Maharashtra. Moreover, the BMC has a budget greater than that of many states in the country. But, there is sympathy for the [Thackeray-led] Shiv Sena in Mumbai city because of the manner in which Uddhav Thackeray was deposed as CM last year. Even the surveys show more seats for the Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena (UBT),” said Mr. Pawar. The NCP leader claimed that as the surveys pointed to more seats for...

Thackeray will have to agree even if his party is given just two Lok Sabha seats, says Bawankule

Speaking to reporters in Nagpur, Bawankule said that BJP treated Thackeray like an elder brother when it had an alliance with the undivided Shiv Sena. But now, the situation is different, he said, referring to Thackeray and Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). The BJP leader claimed that the Congress has already laid its hands on the Ramtek constituency, which was earlier with the Shiv Sena, now being headed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Thackeray broke ties with the BJP in 2019 after differences cropped up over the chief minister's post. He then joined hands with Congress and NCP to become the CM under the banner of the MVA. But his government fell last year following a rebellion led by Shinde. Maharashtra has 48 Lok Sabha seats out of which the undivided Shiv Sena won in 18 constituencies in 2019. Uddhav Thackeray will have to say yes even if Sharad Pawar or Sonia Gandhi asks his party to contest on just two seats as he has no other options left. About claims that a BJP worker named Saurabh Pimpalkar is connected with the death threat to NCP chief Sharad Pawar on social media, Bawankule said that the party worker had only followed the accused on Facebook. He said that neither BJP nor its worker issued any threat to Sharad Pawar on social media. NAGPUR: Maharashtra state BJP President Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Saturday said that Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray is in such a position that he will have to accept even if the Congress and NCP give his party just two Lok Sabha ...

Uddhav Thackeray lacked political acumen, failed to quell revolt says Sharad Pawar

'Wait for my book for reality of 2019 episode': Maharashtra deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis says Sharad Pawar's resignation will not affect BJP Taking a jibe against NCP neta Sharad Pawar, deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said he wanted to write a book where everyone would come to know about the reality of the 2019 oath-taking ceremony with Ajit Pawar for government formation in Maharashtra. Where does NCP go from here: Is Sharad Pawar going to take back his resignation? "I cannot forget that Maharashtra and all of you have given me strong support and love in the last six decades. It’s time for a new generation to guide the party," he said on Tuesday. But is he going to take back his resignation? Pulling no punches, The book said it transpired that Ajit had submitted a list of around 40 legislators in a letter, saying he had the support of the NCP legislature party. "My name was misused to misguide a section of NCP legislators. When I individually asked them, everyone was with NCP and me," said Pawar. Thackeray, Pawar wrote, lacked political acumen. "It was happening owing to lack of experience. In politics, one must act swiftly to protect power. When the MVA was about to fall, he withdrew from the process in the first stage itself. It may have happened owing to his health condition." The MVA was a major achievement for anti-BJP parties when all-out efforts were being made to wind up other political parties, said Pawar. "In my opinion, the Shiv Sena leadershi...

Rabble to rubble: Uddhav Thackeray and the difficulty of being good

As irony would have it, twenty-eight years later, Bhujbal -- in the Nationalist Congress Party since 1999 -- had to work under the Sena patriarch's not-so-charismatic son Uddhav when the latter joined hands with his party and the Congress to become the Chief Minister of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in December 2019. After barely two-and-a-half years of coming to power, that MVA government has now collapsed due to the rebellion led by another Sena heavyweight Eknath Shinde. In between, the Shiv Sena had faced two more rebellions -- one by Narayan Rane, now in the BJP, and, shortly thereafter by Uddhav's cousin Raj. The first three rebellions didn't deal a body blow to Shiv Sena. This one by Shinde and about 40 others, however, has brought it to the brink of an existential crisis. The reasons are not far to seek. First, all the three earlier rebellions happened when Bal Thackeray reigned supreme. The rebels were minnows compared to him and didn't have anywhere near the same degree of support as Shinde, who has taken three-fourths of the party's 56 MLAs along with him. Add to this the fact that Uddhav is sober and reserved and doesn't invoke the fear and respect his father did and you can well understand why this crisis is a dire one. INTERVIEW | There are other factors aligned against the former Chief Minister. Earlier, the rebels didn't have any rival political party supporting them whereas the Shinde group today has the backing of a formidable BJP. And while the ...
