After party name and symbol, will Uddhav’s Shiv Sena faction lose more lawmakers to Eknath Shinde?

‘Khan havaa, ka ban havaa?’ (Do you want Muslims to win or the bow and arrow to triumph?) For over two decades, this rather crude slogan has been used by the Shiv Sena to groom and rally its voters and the party faithful during elections, especially in regions like Marathwada, which has a strong communal overtone to its politics. But now, with the Election Commission (EC) handing over the Shiv Sena’s official name and bow-and-arrow symbol to the camp led by chief minister Eknath Shinde, the faction led by Uddhav Thackeray fears this may accelerate defections from their group to that of Shinde. This is because the Shiv Sena name and the bow-and-arrow symbol command a strong sense of loyalty and recall value in Mumbai and parts of Maharashtra. Shinde loyalists claim that the EC certifying Shinde as the “official” Shiv Sena may lead to some of Uddhav’s six remaining Lok Sabha MPs, 16 legislators and even former corporators in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to join them to contest the forthcoming municipal election on the Shiv Sena name and symbol. This week, MLC Viplav Bajoria, from the Uddhav group, switched loyalties to Shinde, marking the first defection to the ruling camp in the upper house of the legislature. The EC’s move comes as a jolt for Uddhav when he is trying to stand up to the most critical crisis caused by Shinde, his 39 MLAs and 13 Lok Sabha MPs splitting the party, which has resulted in the Thackerays losing the Shiv Sena name and symbol for the...

'BJP is scared of Uddhav Thackeray': Sanjay Raut reacts to Amit Shah’s Nanded speech

Image Source : PTI 'BJP is scared of Uddhav Thackeray': Sanjay Raut Mumbai: Reacting to Union Minister Amit Shah’s speech in Maharashtra’s Nanded, Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut on Sunday said that in Shah's 20-minute speech, seven minutes he spoke only on Uddhav Thackeray, which means that Matoshree's dominance is still intact. He further claimed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is "scared" of his party chief Uddhav Thackeray and said it was a good thing. ‘It is good the BJP is scared…’ In a social media post, Raut said, "It is good the BJP is scared of Uddhav Thackeray. It ensured a split in the party (Shiv Sena), gave name and its symbol to traitors; still the fear of Uddhav Thackeray and Shiv Sena (original) has not gone." “In Shah’s 20-minute speech in Nanded, 7 minutes he spoke only about Thackeray, which means that Matoshree’s dominance is still intact. Shiv Sena party was broken, and names and symbols were given to traitors. Even after this, fear of Thackeray and Shiv Sena is visible, this fear is good,” he said. ‘BJP caught in its own web’ Raut further wondered whether Shah’s rally at Nanded was part of BJP's Maha Sampark Abhiyan or an occasion to criticise Thackeray. The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader said the BJP must introspect about the questions posed to Thackeray. “The BJP is caught in its own web,” Raut claimed. Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Ambadas Danve said the BJP keeps criticising the Shiv Sena (UBT) for breaking the alliance and ...
