Rebuilding Sena: Why the Thackerays are caught between a rock and a hard place

By Darpan Singh: The Uddhav Thackeray government in Maharashtra has fallen. Not because of his allies -- the NCP and the Congress. But because one of his own, Eknath Shinde, broke away with most of the 55 Shiv Sena MLAs to form the government with the BJP. First, a quick recap of what has happened in Maharashtra in the last two-and-a-half years. • The BJP-Shiv Sena combine won the 2019 Assembly polls, the Congress-NCP alliance lost. • The saffron bloc broke up over power-sharing and Fadnavis formed government with an NCP faction but quickly quit as Sharad Pawar rebels returned home. • A Sena-NCP-Congress alliance formed government which has fallen now. CAN AADITYA DO IT? Now, Uddhav Thackeray has vowed to rebuild the Shiv Sena from the ground up. Much of this rebuilding will apparently be left to his son, Aaditya, given his father’s age, health and apparent disenchantment with political heavy-lifting. Uddhav underwent spine surgery last November and operated from home for several weeks. ALSO READ | Also, the 61-year-old Uddhav, who inherited his party from his father, is not a mass leader in the classical sense. He was a member of the Legislative Council (he has also quit this post), while Aaditya, 32, is an MLA from Mumbai’s Worli and heads the Shiv Sena’s youth wing and has been at the forefront of protests against the rebel MLAs. In fact, Aaditya is only the second from the Thackeray family to have run for public office. His aunt Shalini had fought an election on the MN...

In yet another achievement, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's son Tejas and his team have discovered a new fish - the Hiranyakeshi loach - from the picturesque nature-rich Sahyadri region of the Western Ghats. Tejas is the son of Uddhav and Rashmi Thackeray and is the younger brother of Maharashtra's Environment, Tourism and Protocol Minister Aditya Thackeray. Tejas, a naturalist and wildlife photographer, made the announcement in an Instagram post on Friday - earning accolades. The stunning fish - 'Schistura hiranyakeshi sp. nov.' - have been published in 'Aqua, International Journal of Ichthyology'. Endemic to its type locality, the 'kund' at the ancient Hiranyakeshi temple, where the mighty Hiranyakeshi river originates. Leading the paper is Dr Praveenraj Jayasimhan, a young passionate ichthyologist and Shankar Balasubramanian, an explorer and underwater photographer.

Uddhav Thackeray: His son is MP, but my son shouldn't get anything?

MUMBAI: With Shiv Sena filing disqualification petitions against four more rebel MLAs before Maharashtra assembly deputy speaker Narhari Zirwal, the total number of disqualifications sought have gone up to 16. Zirwal has asked the rebel legislators to reply to the disqualification notice within 48 hours. However, two Independent legislators, Mahesh Baldi and Vinod Agarwal, wrote to Zirwal, saying he could not adjudicate on the petitions since there was a no-confidence motion pending against him. Even as the Sena continued to haemorrhage, losing key MLAs like Mumbai's Chandivali legislator Dilip Lande to the rebel faction, party MP Sanjay Raut challenged the rebels. "We are not the sort to get defeated. What you did was wrong. We gave you the opportunity to come here but now your time is up," he said. "We are ready. We challenge you to come to Mumbai and face us." By afternoon, Sena cadres took to the streets in some areas, tearing posters and attacking offices of the rebels. The rebel faction says it will not leave Guwahati before resolving two issues. "If these 16 MLAs are disqualified by the deputy speaker, we will challenge it in court. It is mandatory to hear the MLAs before the deputy speaker takes a decision," said rebel MLA Deepak Kesarkar. He also said the rebel faction will legally challenge the appointment of the Shiv Sena's Sunil Prabhu as chief whip of the legislature party. "We have the support of 38 MLAs and the Sena's chief whip must be from our group," said...

'BJP is scared of Uddhav Thackeray': Sanjay Raut reacts to Amit Shah’s Nanded speech

Image Source : PTI 'BJP is scared of Uddhav Thackeray': Sanjay Raut Mumbai: Reacting to Union Minister Amit Shah’s speech in Maharashtra’s Nanded, Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut on Sunday said that in Shah's 20-minute speech, seven minutes he spoke only on Uddhav Thackeray, which means that Matoshree's dominance is still intact. He further claimed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is "scared" of his party chief Uddhav Thackeray and said it was a good thing. ‘It is good the BJP is scared…’ In a social media post, Raut said, "It is good the BJP is scared of Uddhav Thackeray. It ensured a split in the party (Shiv Sena), gave name and its symbol to traitors; still the fear of Uddhav Thackeray and Shiv Sena (original) has not gone." “In Shah’s 20-minute speech in Nanded, 7 minutes he spoke only about Thackeray, which means that Matoshree’s dominance is still intact. Shiv Sena party was broken, and names and symbols were given to traitors. Even after this, fear of Thackeray and Shiv Sena is visible, this fear is good,” he said. ‘BJP caught in its own web’ Raut further wondered whether Shah’s rally at Nanded was part of BJP's Maha Sampark Abhiyan or an occasion to criticise Thackeray. The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader said the BJP must introspect about the questions posed to Thackeray. “The BJP is caught in its own web,” Raut claimed. Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Ambadas Danve said the BJP keeps criticising the Shiv Sena (UBT) for breaking the alliance and ...
