Uppinakudru is a small island village about 6 - 7 kms north of Kundapura. The art of puppetry has had a strong foundation in this village. Uppinakudru is a must visit for people who are interested in art and culture. The main attraction of this village is the Yakshagana string puppetry theater run by Bhaskar Kamat of Kogga family. The puppet dance drama is a treat to watch. This village island is located 40 kms from Udupi and about 6 kms from Kundapura. For such a small place, it houses many temples - Gopalakrishna temple, Vasudeva temple, Siddhi Vinayak temple and Lakshmi narayan Mutt. This place is known for its ancient Puppetry form of art, few families still strive hard to keep the art alive. The place is nice, but the Karnataka tourism department seem to have done little to improve any facilities here. One advantage is it is close to the highway and so reaching here by road is not a problem. Went there while traveling goa to Mangalore it is just 2 km inside from the national highway (tallur junction )the whole island is covered with greenery ( coco tree if Iam nt wrong )but.
