UGC stands for University Grants Commission set up by the Indian government in 1956 in accordance with the UGC act. It comes under MHRD. It’s charged mainly with coordination, determination, and maintenance of standards of higher education in India. Its major function is to provide recognition to universities in India and take care of the disbursement of funds to such recognized colleges and universities. The UGC was made along the similar framework of University Grants Commission of the UK. This was recommended by the University Education Commission of 1948-1949 under the chairmanship of S. Radhakrishnan. Between 1994-95 the UGC set up 6 regional centers to decentralize its operations. The new regional centers have been set up at Pune, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bhopal, Guwahati, and Bengaluru. However, the days of UGC seems numbered as both successive central governments have proposed setting up a higher regulatory which will absorb UGC and the related body of AICTE. The proposed body will have more sweeping powers to properly regulate the higher education in India.
