The ongoing Covid curfew in the state, which was to end tomorrow morning, was today extended till May 10. Decisions of extending the restrictions further will be taken on next Sunday. Till then, all shops & establishments have been ordered shut. All essential services will continue, including vaccinations. The Supreme Court on Saturday had refused to stay the counting process. In a special urgent hearing on a holiday (Saturday), a bench of Justice A M Khanwilkar and Justice Hrishikesh Roy passed the order after taking note of several notifications and assurances of the SEC that the COVID-19 protocols will be followed at all the 829 counting centres. In a strongly-worded order indicting the state government for inadequate medical help during the recent surge in Covid-19 cases, the court directed the government to shut all establishments, except those involved in essential services, till April 26, apart from a slew of other directions including closure of religious establishments. According to UP police, more than 11500 FIRs have been registered in which over 37,000 persons have been named for allegedly violating the prohibitory orders imposed during the 21 day lockdown announced on March 24. Police is facing a “very huge challenge” in times of COVID-19 and those in frontline handling calls or COVID-19 positive cases are being provided with PPEs.
