Carlos Alcaraz, at just 19, completed an improbable journey on Sunday in Flushing Meadows as he defeated No. 5 Casper Ruud to win the 2022 US Open. Alcaraz came away with a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, 6-2 win over Ruud to win his first career Grand Slam title. In doing so, Alcaraz became the second-youngest player to win a men's US Open title at 19 years, 129 days old, only trailing Pete Sampras. In addition, Alcaraz is the seventh youngest male or female to ever win a Grand Slam tournament. With the Grand Slam victory, Alcaraz becomes the No. 1 ranked player in the world. Additionally, the 19-year-old budding star is also the youngest player to ever be ranked as the world's No. 1 player. Alcaraz's previous best finish came earlier this year when he reached the 2022 French Open quarterfinals, where he lost to Alexander Zverev. Ruud reached a Grand Slam final for the second time this year, as he also made it to the 2022 French Open final. Ruud, who also had never won a Grand Slam title entering Sunday, split the opening two sets with Alcaraz. It appeared that Ruud was going to take a two sets to one lead in the third set. But after Ruud took a 6-5 lead, Alcaraz really turned it on. He came back to win the ensuing game and tie it up at 6-6. The Spanish star won seven of the eight points in the eventual tiebreaker, in addition to winning 10 of the previous 12 points overall. 2022 U.S. Open men's singles draw, bracket, results

The 2022 U.S. Open may go down in history as the arrival of Carlos Alcaraz. At 19 years old, Spain’s phenom beat Norwegian Casper Ruud in the final to become the youngest Grand Slam men’s singles champion since Rafael Nadal won the first of his 22 majors at the 2005 French Open. Alcaraz also became the first teenager to ascend to No. 1 in the ATP rankings, which began in 1973. Alcaraz earned his first major title the hard way, becoming the third man in the Open Era to win back-to-back-to-back five-set matches en route to a major title. He spent 23 hours, 39 minutes on court over seven matches, the most for any man in a single major since time records began being kept in 1999. Nadal’s quest for his 23rd major — and to move two clear of Novak Djokovic for the most in men’s history — ended at the hands of American Frances Tiafoe in the round of 16. Tiafoe became the first American born in 1989 or later to beat Nadal, Djokovic or Roger Federer in a major in 31 tries and the first American to make the U.S. Open semifinals since Andy Roddick in 2006 before falling to Alcaraz in an epic. Djokovic was ineligible for the U.S. Open because he is unvaccinated against COVID-19. U.S. rules required that any non-U.S. citizen must be fully vaccinated against the coronavirus in order to receive a visa to enter the country. Federer, a 20-time major champ, hasn’t played tournament tennis since undergoing a third knee surgery in an 18-month span after a quarterfinal exit at last year’s Wimbl...

Who won the U.S. Open in 2022? Complete scores, results, highlights from The Country Club

Breakthrough in Brookline. Matt Fitzpatrick (-6) earned his first victory on the PGA Tour in a major way, fighting off Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris (both -5) to become the first English golfer since Justin Rose in 2013 to win the U.S. Open. MORE: Fitzpatrick and Zalatoris started the day tied atop the leaderboard at 4 under. The latter seemingly fell out of contention in the front nine with two bogeys in his first three holes. But birdies on 6, 7 and 9 set him up to battle Fitzpatrick until the last putt. Scheffler, meanwhile, suffered another back-nine meltdown after starting with four birdies in six holes. He was still in contention after bogeys on 10 and 11, especially after a late birdie on 17, but a par on the final hole left him no longer in control of his destiny. Fitzpatrick, who carded a 3-under-par final round, faced similarly difficult circumstances at the start of the back nine, bogeying 10 and 11. But birdies on 13 and 15 — the latter a long putt from across the green — gave him the lead with only three holes remaining. He was solid on 16 and 17, but a tee shot into the bunker on 18 nearly spelled disaster as he nursed a one-stroke lead over Zalatoris and Scheffler. No matter: His approach landed in the center of the green, and he two-putted his way to a par. Zalatoris had the final shot of the day and, to his credit, he nearly forced a playoff. But a heartbreaking miss confirmed Fitzpatrick as the winner of the 2022 U.S. Open. The moment The Sporting ...

2022 U.S. Open leaderboard, winner: Matt Fitzpatrick breaks through for first major championship, PGA Tour win

The second-highest ranked golfer in the world without a PGA Tour victory in his career finally claimed one Sunday while simultaneously breaking through golf's upper echelon with his first major championship. Matt Fitzpatrick won the 2022 U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, on Sunday with two birdies and no bogeys across the final seven holes to clinch the tournament at 6 under. Fitzpatrick, 27, edged his 54-hole co-leader Will Zalatoris and 2022 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler by one stroke to hoist the trophy. Having previously won the 2013 U.S. Amateur at The Country Club, Fitzpatrick added to his USGA total in dramatic fashion with a victory at the 122nd U.S. Open. In doing so, he joined Jack Nicklaus and Juli Inkster as the only players to win the two championships at the same venue, solidifying his spot in the annals of golf history. The No. 18 player on the Official World Golf Rankings, Fitzpatrick broke through Sunday after what had already been a strong season at major championships. The Englishman previously finished T14 at the Masters in April and T5 at the PGA Championship last month. Still, it had not been an easy road for Fitzpatrick to this point, and his final round at The Country Club was a perfect encapsulation of this. Whether he would choose to admit it or not, doubt had to creep in as he missed opportunities to win events over the years. A player who had always thrived due to his blend of accuracy and putting prowess, Fitzpatri...
