Bangladesh Bank lets taka float against US dollar

— Selim RF Hussain, chairman of the Association of Bankers, Bangladesh. In an effort to stabilise the forex market, Bangladesh Bank has decided to allow the exchange rates of the taka to float against the US dollar for the first time in a decade. Economists and bankers have welcomed the move as it will help boost remittance inflow and exports, and also put the brakes on the slide in foreign exchange reserves due to hefty import payments. It, however, could fuel inflation resulting from higher costs of import. — Md Habibur Rahman Chief economist of Bangladesh Bank The local currency lost its value by 1 percent against the greenback to Tk 89.90 from Tk 89 per dollar soon after the BB decided to follow the floating exchange rates, which means the market forces, not the central bank, will determine the exchange rates. — Zahid Hussain A former lead economist of World Bank's Dhaka office Since the second week of last month, the BB took measures to stabilise the forex market but the majority of the banks ignored its instructions on the exchange rates. On Sunday, it asked banks to set the selling rate of bills for collection at which lenders sell greenback to importers at Tk 89.15 per dollar. But most of the banks fixed the rate at Tk 94-95, resulting in indiscipline in the foreign exchange market. The central bank also injected a record $6.20 billion into the forex market between July 1 and June 2 this fiscal year. The dollar crunch has already compelled the BB to depreciate the ...

Bangladesh's worst electricity crisis in a decade

SINGAPORE, June 7 (Reuters) - Bangladesh is facing its worst electricity crisis since 2013, a Reuters analysis of government data shows, due to erratic weather and difficulty paying for fuel imports amid declining forex reserves and value of its currency. With forecasts for more heatwaves and the peak power-use months of July-October approaching, the country's Bangladesh, the world's second-largest garments exporter behind China supplying global retailers including Walmart, H&M and Zara, has been forced to cut power for 114 days in the first five months of 2023, a Reuters analysis of power grid data showed. That compares with 113 days in all of 2022. Reuters Graphics Reuters Graphics Power cuts have been most widespread in the late evenings and early mornings, data from the Power Grid Co of Bangladesh showed, with residents and small businesses complaining of unannounced power outages lasting 10-12 hours. Supply was short of demand by as much as 25% early on Monday, the data showed. Reuters Graphics Fuel shortages are the main reason for the supply shortfalls, government data shows. On Monday, nearly a fourth of the 11.5 gigawatts (GW) of the country's gas-fired power plants and about two-thirds of the 3.4 GW of coal-fired capacity were shut for the day because of a lack of fuel, according to the national grid operator's daily report on its website. Over 40% of the 7.5 GW of power plants running on diesel and fuel oil could not operate because they lacked fuel, according t...
