Owaisi's tweet sparks Purola issue, triggers communal tension in Uttarakhand

Express News Service DEHRADUN: Amid controversy over an attempt to abduct a minor in Purola, Uttarkashi, the Purola Pradhan Sangathan has announced a 'mahapanchayat' on June 15. In response to the controversy over the announcement of the 'mahapanchayat', All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi reacted sharply to it and demanded the state government to immediately ban the 'mahapanchayat'. The BJP, on the other hand, hit back, saying, Owaisi's advocacy of 'love jihad' and 'land jihad' was unacceptable in Devbhoomi. The Party strongly objected to Owaisi's statement on the exodus of a particular community. "Owaisi is neither an acceptable leader of the Muslim community nor a supporter, he does vote bank politics everywhere by spreading hatred," party's state media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said. Efforts to change the demography in the state will not be allowed to succeed in any way. "His venomous vocabulary cannot spoil the peaceful atmosphere of Devbhoomi", added Spokesperson Chauhan. Tensions between the two communities in the state over the issue of 'love jihad' have been steadily rising following a tweet by AIMIM national president Asaduddin Owaisi. In a strong reaction to Purola's announcement, the Muslim community has also called for a Mahapanchayat in Dehradun on June 18, while the Purola Pradhan Sangathan is sticking to the June 15 Mahapanchayat. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has clarified the government's intention on this,...

Muslim body writes to Amit Shah over communal tensions in Uttarakhand, seeks action

By Amit Bhardwaj: Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind President Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani on Tuesday wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressing his concerns over the rising communal tension in Uttarkashi district. In his letter, the Jamiat chief requested to stop the proposed June 15 Mahapanchayat called by the right-wing organisations arguing that it may lead to disturbance in the hill state's law and order. After the incident, locals protested and closed markets after a call by the Yamuna Valley Hindu Jagriti Sangathan, which termed the entire incident "love jihad". At least 42 shops belonging to Muslims have reportedly been closed in Purola since May 26. Late on June 6, posters were put by unknown people on the shutters of several shops in the Purola town of Uttarkashi asking owners to vacate their shops by June 15, or face consequences.

Uttarakhand communal tension: Unraveling the complexities of Uttarakashi's ethnic unrest

Shops run by Muslims in Purola remained shut for the 17th consecutive day on Monday even as the top officials held a meeting with different sections of the society and appealed to them to maintain peace and harmony. Interreligious tensions in the area can be traced back to May 26 when two men, one Muslim and one Hindu, were accused of attempting to abduct a 14-year-old girl. The incident was perceived by local residents as a case of 'love jihad,' a term used by right-wing groups to allege a conspiracy by Muslim men to lure and seduce Hindu women, although it is not officially recognized by courts or the Union government. The two accused individuals, Ubed Khan (24) and Jitender Saini (23), were arrested on May 27. However, the incident sparked protests by right-wing groups in various areas, resulting in attacks on shops and houses belonging to several Muslims. On June 5, posters emerged in Uttarkashi's Purola market, threatening Muslim traders to close their shops and vacate the state by June 15. The escalating tension has led to Muslims keeping their shops closed and some families deciding to leave the district. “A meeting of Muslim religious leaders was chaired by Dehradun’s Shehar Qazi Mohammad Ahmad Qasmi on Saturday to discuss the current atmosphere of hatred against Muslims across Uttarakhand. A ‘ mahapanchayat’ of Muslim religious leaders will be held on June 18. People from across the state, including Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, and Haldwani will ...
