Karnataka polls: Siddaramaiah settles for 'safe constituency' Varuna

Political analysts believe that in the 2018 polls, Siddaramaiah made the major mistake of giving up Varuna for son Yatindra and contesting from the Vokkaliga bastion of Chamundeshwari. He lost the seat | File photo After months of indecision and speculation, former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has decided to go back to his safe haven, Varuna constituency. The first list of Congress candidates for the May 2023 elections names Siddaramaiah for the Varuna constituency, thus ending the confusion over selecting the constituency for the veteran leader, which was much ridiculed by rivals BJP and JDS. Siddaramaiah’s son, Dr Yatindra Siddaramaiah, who was representing Varuna, will vacate the constituency for his father. However, going back on his January remark, Siddaramaiah — as well as Yatindra — has recently said that he may contest from two constituencies for “safety”. Analysts believe that in the 2018 elections, Siddaramaiah made the major mistake of giving up his Varuna constituency for Yatindra and contesting from the Vokkaliga bastion of Chamundeshwari. He had selected Badami constituency for “safety”. Thus, the Congress veteran had to concentrate on three constituencies, including Varuna, to help his son win. Also read: As a result, he could not tour the state for the sake of other Congress candidates. Other negative factors were the decision to separate Lingayat as a separate religion and his “anti-Vokkaliga” image because of his statements. All these resulted in...

Somanna promises to do a ‘Govindarajanagar’ in Varuna constituency

Somanna promises to do a ‘Govindarajanagar’ in Varuna constituency Somanna’s reference to Govindarajanagar – a constituency in Bengaluru from where he was elected in 2018 – stems from the repeated rebuke by Mr. Siddaramaiah of the Congress against whom he is pitted April 23, 2023 07:14 pm | Updated 09:19 pm IST - MYSURU Assuring positive change in Varuna which has been held by the Congress ever since the constituency was carved out in 2008, V. Somanna has promised to do a Govindarajanagar in Mysuru hinterland. Somanna’s reference to Govindarajanagar – a constituency in Bengaluru from where he was elected in 2018 – stems from the repeated rebuke by Mr. Siddaramaiah of the Congress against whom he is pitted — and who has dubbed him as an ‘’outsider’’ with ‘’no links’’ — and by inference no locus standi or connection — with respect to Varuna. As a result, Somanna is forced to clarify his position in every speech he makes in the constituency and so it was again on Sunday, April 23, when he hit the track to cover the vast swathe of Varuna constituency spread across parts of Mysuru, T. Narsipura and Nanjangud taluks of the district. Though he had a tight itinerary commencing from 7 a.m., his convoy of supporters reached the first scheduled stop at Bhugathalli on the Mysuru-Bannur Road on the outskirts of the city a little after 9 a.m. Mysuru MP Pratap Simha who accompanied Mr. Somanna described ‘’Mysuru as the land of the maharajas who welcomed people from across India’’ in a bi...

karnataka election varuna seat: Karnataka election results 2023: Siddaramaiah wins Varuna by huge margin

Siddaramaiah is also seen a top contender for the chief minister post, if Congress comes to power. Prior to the run up to the elections he had said that this would be his last election. "After this, I am retiring from politics. It is my desire to represent my native constituency and place and retire. That is the reason I am contesting from Varuna constituency," Siddaramaiah had stated. Varuna had seen 84.74 per cent of voting. Both Siddaramaiah and Somanna had claimed that they will win comfortably. Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Wednesday expressed confidence of getting over 60 per cent votes in the Varuna constituency. "There is a tremendous response from the voters. I will get more than 60 per cent of the votes. Congress will form the government on its own. I am not going to retire but I will not contest elections. This is my last election," Siddaramaiah said after casting his vote. "I have a special appeal to our party workers: You have left home and family to work for the election. Now take some time off and spend time with your parents, wife and children. Our honest struggle will definitely bear fruit. Thanks again and best wishes to you all," Siddaramaiah tweeted. Don’t miss out on ET Prime stories!
