‘Viduthalai Part 1’ movie review: Soori shines in Vetri Maaran’s most politically

‘Viduthalai Part 1’ movie review: Soori shines in Vetri Maaran’s most politically-charged film yet Soori, in the role of his lifetime, brims with energy and innocence as Kumaresan, as director Vetri Maaran’s socio-political commentary gets more vigorous in his latest outing March 31, 2023 06:40 pm | Updated 07:15 pm IST A look at director Vetri Maaran’s filmography shows us a common trope in all the films he has directed; they’re stories of ordinary men, underdogs who are trying to make a living for themselves, only to be unwittingly pulled into a world of chaos that they have to escape unscathed. While this might sound like an over-simplification, it doesn’t dismiss the fact that they’ve all worked, both critically and commercially; this winning streak seems to have continued with Viduthalai Part 1. What’s also evident is how his socio-political commentary has gotten more vigorous with his latest outing, which is also his most politically-charged narrative yet. The cops in Vetri Maaran’s films are usually filled with subservient people hardened by years of conditioning to follow orders or treacherous power-wielders who can misuse them for malicious purposes. While his Visaranai — a film that’s futile to not think about while watching or discussing Viduthalai — introduced us to a conscientious man in the form of Samuthirakani’s Muthuvel, here we get an entire spectrum of policemen; so much so that it would have been befitting to title this film 50 Shades of Khaki. Storylin...

Viduthalai: Part 1 (2023)

Vetrimaaran's Vetri ( Winning ) streak continues... Pros - Heart wrenching brutal cinema . Before getting into detail it's definitely not for light hearted . Viduthalai part1 plays a major role in setting up for part 2 . This time narration wise and making wise there was slight difference from Vetri's previous works . Part 1 explores the world of Viduthalai , Police brutality , separatist and politics . Narration was slow , but that doesn't means flat . Soori as protagonist gave a realistic show stealing performance . VJS had less screentime but created quite impact . Other cast did their part really well , they had enough scope throughout the movie , even GVM played his part neatly . Technical wise , impressive cinematography especially opening single shot sequence one of the best in kollywood , opening shot clearly established the tone of the movie . In a slow burner movie , Climax was total bang , action set pieces were well choreographed , excellently captured and edited . Ilaiyaraaja's back ground scores were well suited to this dark tone and periodic movie , songs were really great . Atlast part 2 glimpse literally increased the hype . Cons - Asusual dubbing was poor as expected , lip syncing were totally odd in most of the places . Editing in few places weren't upto the mark . Overall , a slow burning crime drama . Definitely worthy one for your patience and time . Highly recommended . Strictly 18+ . I hope Part 2 will be released as soon as possible . I don't belie...

Soori on ‘Viduthalai’, the story behind its making, and his takeaway from a 25-year journey Actor Soori talks about Vetri Maaran’s ‘Viduthalai’ in which he is turning lead for the first time, the arduous journey that led to this epic project, and what the future holds March 28, 2023 01:42 pm | Updated 01:58 pm IST In both of Vetri Maaran’s Viduthalai films (parts 1 and 2), comedian Soori is playing the kadhayin naayagan (the plot’s hero) marking his first as the lead star. For those unversed, it might finally look like Soori’s jump to the top, after his parotta comedy sequence in Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu (2009) made him a household name. But the actor has been part of the film industry for more than 25 years now. “I started acting in 1996 and it was Sundar C anna’s Kannan Varuvaan (2000), starring Karthik sir, in which I spoke my first on-screen dialogue; and it was with Goundamani sir! I even posted that scene’s clip on my Instagram,” says Soori who is visibly excited about his new stint in Viduthalai: Part 1 releasing this Friday. Excerpts from an interview: The story of how you got on board Viduthalai deserves a film of its own... Yes, I’ve always been keen on working with Vetri Maaran sir, although people around me would say his films won’t have my style of comedy. Somehow I managed to meet him at his office when he narrated a story set in Karaikudi. The short narration had about five characters, and in all the ones I eyed, he said he had someone else in mind. When he fini...
