Capital Of Vietnam: Guide to History & Hanoi Tourist Attractions

Capital of Vietnam steeped in history, Hanoi’s pulsating with life, bubbling with commerce, buzzing with motorbikes and rich in exotic scents, this is a captivating city and an answer to what is the capital of Vietnam. Hanoi has shaken off its old hostile attitude to travellers and has become one of the most beguiling cities in Asia. It is slow-paced and pleasant, with a lovely landscape of lakes, shaded boulevards, verdant public parks, colonial French houses and astounding modern skyscrapers. Hanoi personifies the spirit of historic Vietnam in the temples, monuments and pockets of ancient culture along the narrow streets of the Old Quarter, yet perfectly reflects the rapid changes sweeping the country as Hanoian yuppies sip cappucinos in roadside cafes and compare cell phones. Hanoi as the official Vietnam’s capital sprawls along the Red River (Song Hong), which is spanned by three bridges. The oldest is the 1682m (5500ft) Long Bien Bridge, built in 1902. Though bombed repeatedly by the US, the bridge supported rail and other traffic continuously throughout the war; today it serves pedestrians and non-motorized vehicles only. A few meters south is the newer Chuong Duong Bridge, and north of the city, servicing the airport, is the Thang Long Bridge. Most of Hanoi’s street are prefixed with pho, while larger roads and boulevards are called duong. The city is divided into seven central districts (quan), surrounded by outlying neighborhoods called hyyen. Can’t-miss quan incl...

Vietnam urges industry to save energy during heatwave

HANOI, May 30 (Reuters) - Vietnam is turning off street lights and manufacturers are switching operations to off-peak hours to keep the national power system running amid record temperatures in some areas that have caused a surge in demand. As weather officials warn the heatwave could run into June, several cities have Temperatures this week are expected to hover between 26 and 38 degrees Celsius (78.8 and 100.4 degrees F), weather officials say. To tackle the problem, Hanoi has shortened the duration of public lighting by an hour each day, while halving illumination on some major roads and in public parks. "If people all save energy, all will have enough electricity to use, but if not, there will be a partial electrical overload that will put the power grid at risk," said Luong Minh Quan, an electrician with EVN in Hanoi. Last week, Vietnam called for electrical devices to be turned off when not in use, and for air-conditioning to be kept above 26 degrees C (78.8 degrees F). Authorities are pushing industrial consumers to operate during off-peak hours, when overall electricity demand is lower, to ease pressure on the national grid, said one industry source, who spoke on condition of anonymity. More than 11,000 companies, from large factories of China's Texhong Textile Group to South Korean shoemaker Changshin, have agreed to cut consumption where possible, the Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam (ERAV) says. Some Hanoi residents turned to a waterpark to cool off, ...

A Tale Of Two Capitals: Hanoi And Hue

HANOI & HUE, Vietnam — The leading hotels in each of Vietnam’s most culturally profound destinations have come up with ‘A Capital Idea,’ a five-day, four-night exploration of cities that each reigned for a spell as the country’s capital.
