Robert Rickey starts his day before sunrise. “It’s a giant balloon with a sensor on the bottom as it goes up in the atmosphere it records temperatures, humidity, and winds,” said Robert Rickey, an incident meteorologist for the National Weather Service. He works to gather critical information to create a “fire forecast." He works to gather critical information to create a “fire forecast." “Wind speeds tell us a large part where the fire is going and how fast it is going to get there,” said Rickey. Rickey works for the National Weather Service in Flagstaff. “I’ve been an IMET for about seven seasons now,” said Rickey. He has special training as an incident meteorologist and is one of only about 100 in the U.S., all creating and communicating a very different kind of weather forecast. “We may talk about how the winds are going to flow up and down in a drainage or how humidity is going to vary from one side of a ridge to another,” said Rickey. It’s a job meant to protect the public but also all the fire crews on the ground. “A lot of firefighters have been lost due to unexpected changes in the weather,” said Rickey. Tropical Weather Forecast – June 13, 2023

There's a system located several hundred miles south of the SW Mexican coast. It's disorganized at this point but has a 10% chance for development over the next few days. However, it's moving away from the United States. Elsewhere, tropical activity is not expected in the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean or Atlantic at this time.

Tonight: Partly cloudy and dry. Friday is hot & dry. Saturday now looks mainly dry as the trend for rain this weekend is now focused more on Saturday night and Sunday. So expect a hot day near 90 Saturday. We’ll let you know if the rain shifts earlier, but the timing looks to be more in the overnight into Sunday period. Sunday we’ll watch for scattered rain and storms, resulting in a cooler day with more clouds and a high in the 80s. The severe threat is expected to remain southwest of our area but we’ll be watching for any changes as we get closer to Sunday.
