India likely to receive normal monsoon rains despite El Nino

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI, May 26 (Reuters) - India is likely to receive a normal amount of monsoon rain in 2023 despite the likely emergence of the El Nino weather phenomenon, the state-run weather office said on Friday, the fifth year of normal or above-normal summer rain. The monsoon is the lifeblood of the country's $3 trillion economy, Asia's third-largest, and delivers nearly 70% of the rain it needs to water farms and recharge reservoirs and aquifers. Nearly half of India's farmland doesn't have irrigation cover and depends on the annual June-September rains to grow a number of crops. The rains, which usually lash the southern tip of Kerala state around June 1 and retreat by September, are expected to total 96% of the long-term average this year, D. S. Pai, a senior official at the India Meteorological Department (IMD), told reporters on Friday. The IMD defines average, or normal, rainfall as ranging between 96% and 104% of the 50-year average of 87 cm (35 inches) for the four-month season. Ample farm production may also allow India to lift curbs imposed on sugar, wheat and rice exports. India is the world's second-biggest producer of wheat, rice and sugar and the biggest importer of palm oil, soyoil and sunflower oil. However, rainfall totals for June are likely to be be...

Cyclone likely to hit India's west coast, south Pakistan on Thursday

MUMBAI, June 12 (Reuters) - A storm off India's west coast has strengthened to become a powerful cyclone and could hit India's western state of Gujarat and southern parts of Pakistan this week, the Indian weather department said on Monday. The cyclone, named Biparjoy, is expected to make landfall on Thursday afternoon between Mandvi in Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan with maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 km (78-84 miles) per hour, gusting to 150 km (93 miles) per hour, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. Nearly a dozen districts in coastal Gujarat will be affected by heavy rainfall and gusting winds although some of these are sparsely populated, which would limit the damage, said a weather office official, who declined to be named. Fishermen in Gujarat have been advised against going to sea and those at sea have been called back, with 21,000 boats parked so far, the government said on Monday. Offshore oil installations have also been asked to ensure immediate return of all manpower, and two of India's largest ports - Kandla and Mundra - located in Gujarat have been alerted while other ports have been advised for preventive action. The Adani conglomerate's ports business, Adani Ports The Indian Coast Guard said it was evacuating 50 personnel from a jack-up oil rig off Gujarat's coast named Key Singapore, which is owned by Dubai-based Shelf Drilling Shelf Drilling and Cairn Oil & Gas did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Cyclone Biparjoy to make landfall on Gujarat coast. Here's how other states will be affected

By India Today News Desk: Cyclone Biparjoy is likely to make landfall near Jakhau Port in Gujarat's Kutch district on Thursday (June 15) and several states have braced up for the impact. According to the details, thatched houses and kutcha houses are expected to be severely hit by the cyclone. There could also be a threat from flying objects, while power and communication poles could be uprooted. Meanwhile, the state administration has shifted more than 74,000 people living near the coast as a precaution and deployed disaster management units for rescue and relief measures, officials told PTI on Wednesday. With the cyclone in the Arabian Sea barrelling towards the Gujarat coast, parts of the Saurashtra-Kutch region received heavy rains accompanied by strong winds, the Met department said. This will be the second cyclone to hit the state in two years after 'Tauktae' in May 2021. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), cyclone 'Biparjoy' would make landfall near Jakhau Port on Thursday evening as a 'very severe cyclonic storm' with maximum wind speed reaching up to 150 kilometres per hour. However, the cyclone will immediately weaken following landfall due to the dry winds active in Pakistan and adjoining western areas.
