Evacuation in focus as cyclone Biparjoy nears, NDRF heads to Gujarat

Over 35,000 people from coastal areas in Gujarat have been evacuated and moved to makeshift relief centres ahead of cyclone Biparjoy, which is expected to cause extensive damage when it makes landfall near Jakhau port in Kutch district on Thursday, officials said on Tuesday. The army arranges relief materials for local residents in Gujarat’s Bhuj on Tuesday. Union home minister Amit Shah and health minister Mansukh Mandaviya held review meetings on Tuesday as India Meteorological Department said that ‘Biparjoy’ has an extensive damaging potential and it is likely to impact Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka and Jamnagar districts of Gujarat the most. Cyclone Biparjoy is predicted to cross Saurashtra and Kutch coasts near Jakhau Port on the evening of June 15 as a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ with a maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 kmph gusting to 150 kmph. Cyclone Biparjoy is now completely detached from the monsoonal flow and will not adversely impact the advance of the rain-bearing system or its performance, the India Meteorological Department said on Tuesday. Addressing a press conference here, IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the cyclone, however, helped the monsoon advance over southern parts of the peninsula by increasing the cross-equatorial flow over the Arabian Sea. As Cyclone Biparjoyintensified into an "extremely severe cyclonic storm" on Sunday, a warning was issued for the coastline in Gujarat and Pakistan, the areas surrounding where it is expected to make landfall. According to the latest information by India Meteorological Department (IMD), ‘Biparjoy’ over the east-central Arabian Sea will cross Saurashtra-Kutch in Gujarat and adjoining Pakistan coasts around the afternoon of June 15. The impact, however, is expected to be the harshest in Gujarat where it will hit as a "very severe cyclonic storm (VSCS)". As of this morning, Cyclone Biparjoylay centred about 480 kilometres south-southwest of Porbandar, 530 km south-southwest of Dwarka and 610 km south-southwest of Naliya in Kutch, IMD bulletin showed. "VSCS (very severe cyclonic storm) 'Biparjoy' intensified into an ESCS (extremely severe cyclonic storm) at 5:50 am today (Sunday), about 480 km SSW of Porbandar, 530 km SSW of Dwarka and 610 km SSW of Naliya.
