Mumbai to see Pre Monsoon showers soon, Monsoon arrival delayed

Pre monsoon showers usually make an appearance over the city of Mumbai during the last few days of May. Monsoon makes an onset over the commercial capital of the country on June 10. However this time, since the onset has coincided with the storm in the Arabian Sea, there is likely to be a delay in rains. This year, there has been no measurable rain in May. Even in the first week of June, traces of rain has been recorded. The onset of monsoon over the Indian mainland has been delayed and has yet not made its entry into Kerala. Mumbai will also see a delay in the arrival. Pre Monsoon showers are expected over Mumbai on June 9, 10 and 11. More showers are expected thereafter. As far as the storm is concerned, when Biparjoy moves abeam Mumbai, it will still be at a distance of 700 km, which is too far to give any significant impact.

Update: As of June 15, the southwest monsoon remains stuck, having only covered the southernmost parts of Coastal Maharashtra and the entirety of Goa. Saturday, June 10: While the 2023 southwest monsoon season arrived over Kerala on June 8 — eight days later than its normal date of June 1 — its progression across India’s western coast since then has been rapid. In fact, as per the latest update provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), conditions are becoming favourable for the further advancement of southwest monsoon into Goa and some parts of Maharashtra during the next 48 hours. If this prediction turns out to be true, monsoon will step foot into Goa and southern coastal Maharashtra by June 11-12 — about 6-7 days later than its ‘normal’ onset date of June 5. However, its subsequent progress over India's western coast is likely to be delayed, as the monsoon's Arabian Sea branch is not expected to progress until at least June 22. Therefore, Mumbai may have to wait until the fourth week of June for the first monsoon showers to arrive. Based on weather data from 1961 to 2019, the monsoon normally arrives in Mumbai by June 11, a day after its onset in Pune around June 10. Thereafter, it reaches Ahmednagar by June 12 and Nagpur by June 15. However, parts of Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha will also have to endure a much longer wait this year, considering the monsoon rains are yet to touch the inland areas of South Peninsular India. After May 10, the...
