Summary Sikkim Avalanche Highlights: A massive avalanche descended on the popular Nathu La mountain pass in Sikkim, trapping several tourists. As per an official, quoted by PTI, at least seven tourists are dead and 11 injured. The deceeased include four men, a woman, and a child. The avalanche struck at the 14th mile on Jawaharlal Nehru Road connecting Gangtok with Nathu La. The injured are being brought to the state capital Gangtok's hospital, PTI reported. "Rescue and clearance operations are still on," a senior police official here said. As per ANI, 22 tourists have been rescued and operations are underway, ANI quoted Border Roads Organisation (BRO) as saying, adding that 350 stranded tourists and 80 vehicles were rescued after clearing the snow from the road. More than 150 tourists are feared trapped. Gangtok has reported 50 mm rainfall in the 24 hours till 8.30 am on Tuesday. By India Today News Desk: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the The cyclone's name was suggested by Yemen after the Red Sea port city, which is known to have introduced coffee to the world over 500 years ago. A cyclonic circulation is lying over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea, the weather agency said in its bulletin. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the region on Monday. "It is likely to intensify into a depression over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea around May 9. Thereafter, it is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm while moving nearly northwards towards central Bay of Bengal and adjoining North Andaman Sea," the IMD said. The details of its path and intensification will be provided after the formation of the low pressure area. The system is under constant watch and being monitored regularly, the IMD said. LIGHT TO MODERATE RAIN PREDICTED IN BENGAL On Sunday, the IMD predicted light to moderate rainfall in several districts across West Bengal owing to a rise in heat and humidity level. "However there is very little possibility of rains caused by the cyclone in the next two days and the picture will be clearer by Tuesday," a met office spokesperson said.
