West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Sukanta Majumdar will meet Governor CV Ananda Bose today in Rajbhawan. Majumdar will meet him on June 10 in light of the upcoming Panchayat elections in the state. The Panchayat elections in West Bengal will be held on July 8, the State Election Commission said on Thursday. Earlier, West Bengal Congress President Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury requested Governor CV Ananda Bose in a letter yesterday to arrange for Central forces during the Panchayat elections to have free and fair elections. “I have solid reason to apprehend that a free and fair election to three-tier Panchayat in the month of July 2023 in West Bengal, would be a far-reaching dream. Therefore, I humbly solicit your good office to do the needful for conducting the said election under the direct supervision of the central forces. Your prompt action in this regard is highly solicited,” he requested in his letter to the Governor. This comes after a Congress worker was killed during the campaigns. Talking about the assassination of a party worker Fulchand Shaikh, Chowdhury alleged that “Jungle rule” prevails in the state under which the thugs and miscreants of the ruling party are preying upon the opposition workers like they are some “monsters of the deep”. The West Bengal Panchayat election 2023 is scheduled to be held in a single phase on July 8, the Election Commission announced on Thursday. The filing of nominations to begin on June 9 till June 15. The last date of the withdrawal of nominations is June 20 and the results of the polls for the village councils will be announced on July 11, State Election Commissioner Rajiva Sinha said in a press conference. According to the State Election Commission data, the TMC won 590 of the 825 Zila Parishad, 4,974 of 9,217 Panchayat Samiti and 21,269 Gram Panchayat seats in 2018. The BJP emerged as the second largest party by winning 22 Zila Parishad seats, 760 Panchayat Samiti seats and 5776 Gram Panchayat seats. The CPI(M) and the Congress parties were in close contest in Panchayat Samiti and Gram Panchayat elections with 111 seats and 133 seats, respectively. In the Zila Parishad election, Congress managed to win only six seats. West Bengal Sees Widespread Violence During Panchayat Elections; Here'S Why The Polls Matter

Fresh violence was reported in parts of West Bengal ahead of July 8 panchayat elections. The violence over the filing of nominations for the polls continued for the fifth consecutive day in parts of South 24 Parganas and Bankura districts on Tuesday. The Opposition – BJP, Congress and CPI (M) – accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of using muscle power to stop candidates of opposition parties from filing nominations. According to a PTI report, activists of the ruling TMC and opposition parties clashed, forcing the police to use force to disperse the mob. Supporters of the Indian Secular Front (ISF) and the TMC clashed in the Bhangore area of South 24 Parganas. The police force was rushed to the spot, which then resorted to baton charge to control the situation. Bombs were also hurled and several cars were ransacked as supporters of the two groups tried to stop each other from filing nominations. Many people from both sides were injured. "The TMC goons unleashed violence since last night to stop our candidates from filing nominations," ISF leader and Bhangore MLA Naushad Siddique was quoted by PTI as saying.
