West Point Route (Railroad)

Last revised: June 9, 2023 By: The West Point Route was a fondly remembered southern system which connected Atlanta with Montgomery, Alabama. The name itself was actually a marketing term only used by the Atlanta & West Point (A&WP) and Western Railway of Alabama (WRoA). The two companies met at West Point, Georgia and for many years were under the Georgia Railroad & Banking Company's control, which connected Atlanta with Augusta and Macon. All three got their start handling agricultural-related traffic, transitioned to manufacturing and merchandise, and then spent later years as successful bridge lines. From an early period they were jointly owned by the Louisville & Nashville and Atlantic Coast Line, remaining subsidiaries until the 1980's. History During a flurry of mergers beginning in the 1960's their identity slowly disappeared. First, the Seaboard Coast Line was created and then all railroads under SCL's control fell under the marketing name, " Family Lines System." Finally, theyvanished into the Seaboard System and CSX Transportation. Today, the West Point Route continues to play an important role under CSX. Photos Georgia Railroad The history of the West Point Route is one of struggle, perseverance, and eventual success. The Georgia Railroad was technically not part of the West Point Route although as the long-time owner a brief history will be provided here. Its ancestry begins on December 21, 1833 when theGeorgia Railroad Company was chartered to build a new lin...

A Brief History – Ontario & Western Railway Historical Society

The New York, Ontario and Western Railway started out as the New York and Oswego Midland Railroad, running from Oswego on Lake Ontario southeast to the New Jersey border at Unionville, where the New Jersey Midland Railroad continued to Jersey City. After the reorganization in 1880 of the New York and Oswego Midland (and the New Jersey Midland), the newly-organized New York, Ontario and Western built a new route in New York, from the old route at Middletown east to Cornwall on the Hudson River. The opening of the West Shore in 1884 gave the New York, Ontario and Western trackage rights from Cornwall south to Weehawken, which it kept through the reorganization and buyout by the New York Central. The New York & Oswego Midland Railroad, the O&W’s predecessor, was the grandiose vision of Dewitt C. Littlejohn, a dynamic politician bearing an uncanny resemblance to Abraham Lincoln. His concept of a direct rail route northwest across New York State, serving virgin territory not reached by any existing line, seemed logical. Thus in 1868 the “Midland” began building, meandering this way and that to reach the towns which had put up money for its construction. Its twisting route was built “at right anglesto the mountains” requiring steep grades, high bridges and enormous fills. Construction costs far exceeded estimates, and within a month of completion the Midland was bankrupt. But it survived, and was reorganized in 1880 as the New York, Ontario & Western Railway. Shortly after the O...

Mumbai locals running late due to disruption at suburban Malad station

Earlier, a technical snag had affected the Mumbai suburban local train services, informed the Western Railways. The Mumbai local train services were impacted due to a technical snag after an overhead wire snapped between Dahisar and Borivali on the Churchgate-bound fast line. While some trains were held up, others were diverted due to the technical snag. "Over Head Equipment (OHE) wire snapped at around 10.02 am between Dahisar and Borivali. Announcements were made at stations as well as on trains. Work was carried out on war footing & services have now been restored," Sumit Thakur, CPRO, Western Railway said.

Western Railway Museum (Suisun City)

Very nice museum, with lots of photos. Look through the gift shop, there are many books with the great history of rail and trains in the greater area. The historic trains, street cars and rail cars give a glimpse into how things were many years ago. Very interesting that in the greater Bay Area they used the Key System that was electric. It covered such a large area and provided a economical way to provide public transportation. In the politics of "progress" it was primarily replaced with fuel buses and partially with BART. Now we are on our way to repeating history and going back to electric. The train ride is a great addition to a visit. See the ranch land for cows and sheep, water ways and at then end you can see all the way to Vallejo. Terrific day to spend with friends and family (not recommended for toddlers or young children). Check in advance and see train ride with lemonade and cookies or local wines. Surprising museum seemingly in the middle of no where. A very, very nice property. A complete collection of Interurbans and electric railway cars. My Dad rode the Interurban in Indiana in the 1920's and 30's. It connected the State when cars were new and good roads hadn't been built yet. Too bad we became so dependent on our cars - light rail would be a good solution to many of our challenges today. We rode an Interurban on a 50 minute ride south of the museum on open country. They also have two huge barns of old cars and a lot of history. A step back in time to see ...
