It promised to produce much greater amount of grains on a single plant. (iii) Use of modern technology:By the use of well-developed ability to cultivate their land with greater efficiency. (iv) Use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides:Farmers use pump sets for irrigation, threshers for threshing, harvesters for harvesting, tractors for ploughing etc.Use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides improves fertility of soil and reduces pest respectively for the particular period of production. The different ways of increasing production on the same piece of land are – • To increase production on the same piece of land, one could grow three different types of crops. For example – during the rainy season, farmers could grow Jowar and Bajra. Between October and December, the potato could be grown and in the winter season, wheat is sown. Sometimes farmers also use a small piece of land to grow sugarcane which is harvested once in a year. • On the same piece of land, a farmer could grow more than one crop, this process is known as multiple cropping. For example – on the same piece of the land farmer could grow two main crops like Bajra and Wheat and sometimes also grow the third crop like the potato. • The other way to increase production is through modern farming methods. Earlier, traditional seeds and natural manure were used. But after the Green Revolution, the cultivation of wheat and rice increased by using High Yielding Varieties (HYVs) of seeds. The HYV seeds produced more quantity as compared to traditional seeds. But this method is only possible with the combination of HYV seeds, irrigation, chemical fertilisers, pesticides, etc. Example – in states like Punjab, Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh, this method was used, and they got the expected outcome. 17 List out any ten non-farming activities in a modern village. They can be the ones currently being practised in Indian villages or you can innovate and suggest new ones and keeping in mind the activities sui...
