Autotrophic nutrition:Preparation of organic food from the inorganic material in the organism’s own body is known as autotrophic nutrition also called self nourishing organisms. There are two modes of autotrophic nutrition:- • Photoautotrophic nutrition • Chemoautotrophic nutrition Photoautotrophic nutrition is the preparation of organic food from inorganic material by utilizing sun’s energy (photosynthesis process) and on the other hand, chemoautotrophic nutrition or chemosynthesis is the preparation of organic food with the help of chemical reaction energy. The necessary conditions for autotrophic nutrition are chlorophyll, sunlight, carbon dioxide, water in photoautotrophic nutrition they take carbon dioxide and water from the environment and transform these into the glucose and oxygen by the process of photosynthesis trapped by chlorophyll; and in chemoautotrophic nutrition, some bacteria develops a technique to capture energy released by the oxidation of inorganic chemical substances and make organic food. • The autotrophic organisms are self-feeders that can synthesize the organic compounds using carbon dioxide as a source of carbon and water as an electron donor. Green plants are photoautotrophs that carry out photosynthesis, a process that requires atmospheric carbon dioxide, water, sunlight, and chlorophyll. • The energy of sunlight is trapped by chlorophyll and is used to fix carbon dioxide into organic compounds (glucose) in the presence of water. These organic compounds are used by plants for their own growth and maintenance and stored in the form of starch that serves as a source of energy when required. Since water molecules serve as an electron donor, oxygen is produced during the process of photosynthesis as a by-product and is released into the air.

“Autotrophic nutrition is a process where an organism prepares its own food from a simple inorganic material like water, mineral salts and carbon dioxide in the presence of sunlight.” The term “autotrophic” is formed by the combination of two terms, “ a uto” meaning self, and  “trophic” meaning  nutrition. The literal meaning of this term is self-nutrition. The autotrophic organisms contain a green coloured pigment called chlorophyll which helps in trapping energy from the sun. All green plants possess an autotrophic mode of nutrition. They prepare their own food by utilizing solar energy, water, and carbon dioxide by the process of photosynthesis. This results in the formation of glucose. Plants like blue-green algae and bacteria such as cyanobacteria are considered to be examples of autotrophs.
