Google TV has been all over the news recently, because of recent press events by Logitech and Sony, with the search engine giant making its big play for the living room space. Even with all the hubbub, Google's new home entertainment platform can be tough to understand, so we've rounded up some of the basic questions you might have about Google TV. What is Google TV? The basic pitch for Google TV is the capability to search all of your TV content through a search bar similar to Google.com's, which displays on your TV. The search bar overlays whatever screen you're on and combs through online video sources as well as live TV from your cable/satellite box to find content. (Currently, Google TV searches only DVR programs for Dish DVRs, although we've been told that support for other DVRs will roll out over time.) As per usual with Google, there have been many different forms of Google TV over the years. It used to be an operating system for TVs all the way back at the birth of the smart TV but was discontinued in 2014. Google TV in its current guise comes in a few forms but in essence it is a new user interface to help make finding the content you want to watch easier. What is Google TV? Google TV isn’t quite a replacement for Android TV in the way you make think it would be. The number of appsand sheer amount of content available today makes it difficult to easily find out what to watch, so Google set about creating a new interface after a rethink about what content discovery should like on a TV. That led to Google TV, a user interface that knits and curates all the content from your apps and subscriptions that you watch (or want to watch) in one place. It’s essentially a skin that lives on top of the existing Android operating system, personalising the user experience and making it easier for content to surface and be discovered. How does Google TV work? At the top of the screen is a row of tabs such as ‘Search’, ‘For You’ and ‘Library’ to make it easier and faster for users to jump back into what they were watching or start something new. Google TV also features full Google Photos support, allowing users to showcase their photos from the cloud to their big-screen television. Google Cast is still possible on the Google Chromecast with Google TV, but this is not the default for this device. Unlike Chromecast devices before it, this new Chromecast comes with a remote. TCL has long been the flag bearer of Roku TVs. The company’s 6-series is one of the best-performing sets you can buy for under $1,000. It features a fantastic picture with the help of Mini LED backlighting — TCL beat Samsung and LG to implementing that technology — and quantum dot HDR color. The 5-series and 4-series Roku TVs are no slouches either in their respective pricing tiers. But now TCL is taking a step that could dramatically shake up the US TV market: it’s expanding beyond Roku and will release updated versions of its most popular TVs that come with Google TV on board. The software that debuted on Google’s 2020 Chromecast (and also runs on recent TVs from Sony) will now be offered on the latest 5-series and 6-series TVs. I recently spoke with some of TCL’s executives who made it abundantly clear that the company is not transitioning to Google TV instead of Roku or walking away from its longtime partner. Rather, TCL expects that the TV operating system landscape will take after smartphones and eventually consolidate down to two choices: Roku OS and Google TV.
