Row over Padmavati: A Case of Wounded Civilization

The character of Padmavati is a cocktail of facts and fiction which now made into a film. The film is slated to release on December 1 but it continues to be mired in controversy. There are groups and individuals who allege that the film distorts historical facts and any denigration to the character of Padmavati is intolerable because they worship this queen. Such groups are protesting against the film primarily because a Muslim ruler of Delhi had cast an evil eye on this Rajput beauty who preferred to jump in fire (jauhar), than to submit herself to the conqueror of her kingdom. Padmini, also known as Padmavati, is a legendary 13th-14th century queen. She is believed to be alive some time in years 1296 -1315 AD. The earliest source to mention is ‘Padmavat’, an epic poem written by a Muslim poet, Malik Muhammad Jayasi in 1540 AD, some 250 years after the fictitious legendry queen passed into history. The poem which features elements of fantasy, describes the story of Padmavati as an exceptionally beautiful princess of the Singhala kingdom from Sri Lanka. If that is true how a Buddhist did became Rajput queen? The poet further say that Ratan Sen, the Rajput ruler of Chittor, heard about the beauty of Padmavati from a talking parrot named Hiraman. Can this be believed? This prompted Ratan Sen to make an adventurous journey to Sri Lanka. How did he go to Srilanka via Tamil Nadu or Gujarat, this is unknown? What is known unlike Ravana who kidnapped Sita and took her to Sri Lank...

Ranveer Singh to Play a Bisexual Alauddin Khilji In ‘Padmavati’?

All the controversy surrounding the depiction of Rani Padmavati and her alleged romance with Alauddin Khilji has now died down. The makers of the film have clarified that there will be “no romantic scene or song or dream sequence between Rani Padmavati and Alauddin Khilji”, but what’s interesting is that according to reports, Alauddin Khilji, played by Ranveer Singh, will be shown as bisexual. What we know is that Deepika as Rani Padmavati and Shahid as Raja Rawal Ratan Singh are paired opposite each other in the historical while Aditya Rao Hydari is signed on to play one of Alauddin Khilji’s many wives in the film. When the controversy around the depiction of Rani Padmavati and Alauddin Khilji’s relationship in the film first made headlines, a few media platforms had questioned if Bhansali was ignoring the more fascinating relationship - that between Khilji and Kafur. From these reports, we guess Bhansali has addressed that too. Co-produced by Viacom 18 and Bhansali Productions, Padmavati releases on 1 December. (Source: Filmfare )

Who killed Rawal Ratan Singh? – IronSet

Padmavat tells a story, which historians don’t value much, treating it as a work of fiction of the queen of Chittor named Padmavati, who was coveted by Delhi’s sultan Alauddin Khilji , known for his military conquests across India and strong market regulations in the capital to keep the prices of articles in control. Why did Khilji attacked Chittor? The later legends based on Malik Mohammad Jaisi’s epic poem Padmavat state that Alauddin invaded Chittor to obtain Padmini, the queen of Ratnasimha (called Ratan Sen or Ratan Singh in these legends). According to these legends, a man named Raghava told Alauddin about the extraordinary beauty of Padmini. Is padmavati real history? Padmavati is NOT real. Who was Padmavati? Padmavat is a fictional retelling of the siege of Chittor and in the poem, Alauddin Khilji’s reason for attacking Chittor is his lust for the beautiful Queen Rani Padmini, the wife of Rana Rawal Ratan Singh (to be played by Shahid Kapoor in Bhansali’s Padmavati). Ranveer Singh plays Alauddin Khalji in Padmaavat. He welcomes you with a big smile. Once into the interview, he looks down at your recorder, closes his eyes, frowns and carefully answers every question. He is eccentric, keeps you guessing and interested in him. He is Ranveer Singh, and no wonder he was Padmaavat’s Alauddin Khilji. As his controversy-ridden epic Padmaavat hits theaters this week, Ranveer sat down with indianexpress.com to talk about the risk and struggle of playing Khilji, his ever-growing relationship with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and why the incessant protests against the film made him angry, but not disillusioned. I am very happy with the reaction to my performance. I am relieved actually because it was a very big risk for me to take. A part like this at this stage of my career, and especially with people advising me against it. They said it was too big a risk to play a villain, a negative shade at this point in my career. In our country, if they love the character, they love the actor and the opposite could happen. But I am very happy that I put my faith in the evolution of the audience that they will be able to recognise my perf...

Padmavati: A tribute to two other women of Alauddin Khilji’s time

There is no doubt that Khilji was blood-thirsty, as contemporary accounts list his massacres, many of them pointless except to cement his reputation as a fearful conqueror. But the story of Deval Devi and Khizr Khan is an aberration, which may be why Amir Khusro –who lived through the short and gory Khilji era and the start of the Tughlaq dynasty—decided to immortalise it in a masnavi often referred to as ‘Ishqiya’ in 1315. Some say he composed it as a local alternative to popular Persian love stories of that time like Layla-Majnu. Whether Deval and Khizr actually fell in love or were pawns in royal realpolitik will never be known but their story certainly sheds a different light on Alauddin. The story goes that when he defeated Rai Karna Dev II (who fled with his daughter Deval to Devagiri) Alauddin married the Vaghela queen Kaula Devi. She eventually won his trust and a decade later on her plea to bring her daughter Deval back, Alauddin despatched his general Malik Kafur, the infamous Gujarati Hindu convert to Deogiri (later Daulatabad), to do so. That Alauddin supposedly listened to a captured queen is piquant enough; that he sent Malik Kafur (whom some historians aver had a “special” relationship with the Sultan) to fulfil her wish is even more unusual. But the most remarkable fact of all is that Alauddin allowed the Hindu princess Deval to marry his eldest son Khizr, after whom he renamed Chittorgarh fort (of Padmini fame) Khizrabad in 1303. As no less a personage tha...
