What happened to monday

I had the unique opportunity to watch a movie called “What Happened to Monday” with my fellow Rose Scholars, and the movie left me both horrified and fascinated by the events that unfolded. I went into the movie “blind”, so I did not know much about the movie beyond the basic plot of seven identical sisters playing out their lives as the same person when in the outside world when suddenly one day, one of the sisters disappears. While a warning was given before the movie about it containing scenes with violence, I was unaware of the amount of violence involving blood and death. I usually do not watch movies containing graphic violence, so in this aspect I did not enjoy the film and had to look away from the screen at times during fight scenes. Despite the amount of violence within the movie, the premise itself is interesting. In the film, over-population has led to the idea of a law involving each family only having one child and any additional children being put to sleep in order for them to “wake up to a better future”. This is why the seven sisters all pretend to be a single person: if not for their acting and coordination where each sister goes outside of their shared apartment on the day matching their name (for example, “Monday” going outside only on Mondays), six of the sisters would have already been taken in by the government and put to sleep. A harrowing ordeal pits the sisters in life-threatening situations who fight through many obstacles to uncover some dark secrets. Written by Max Botkin and Kerry Williamson, ‘What Happened to Monday’ is an engaging science fiction film with a long-lasting impact. The film’s themes and its narrative revolving around the seven sisters got us hooked, and we decided to go through its details for an informed point of view. Here’s what we have decoded. SPOILERS AHEAD. What Happened to Monday Plot Synopsis In the year 2043, overpopulation has led to a worldwide crisis and food shortage. Due to the effects of climate change, there aren’t enough resources to feed the population. Scientists have resorted to genetically modified crops to increase the yield, which, in turn, causes a deeper problem. The consumption of these crops has somehow increased the fertility and birth rate, leading to a further rise in population levels. In a future not that dissimilar from the one imagined in “ When Terrence Settman ( And then Monday doesn’t come home one night. The other six girls, who have distinct enough personalities to allow Rapace to have a little fun—one is more of a bookworm than her sisters, one is more physically outgoing, etc.—have to figure out what happened to Monday. It leads them into the clutches of the Child Allocation Board, and the truth about Nicollete Cayman’s vision for the future. It’s certainly not a bad idea for a sci-fi film, or an extended episode of “Black Mirror,” but screenwriters “What Happened to Monday” is just not as fun as you’d think it would be given the ridiculousness of its concept, the talent of its star, and even that one action scene. Part of the problem is the lack of a distinct villain—Close hams it up in a few scenes but she’s not memorable enough or given enough time—which means Rapace has to flee a series of Men in Black with Guns, which just gets tiresome after a while. It’s one of those Netflix films or shows that might get the job done on a boring Friday night, but that you won’t remember by Monday. We’re starting to see those with shocking regularity. Let’s hope the pattern changes soon.
