What Is GitHub, and What Is It Used For?

GitHub is a website and service that we hear geeks rave about all the time, yet a lot of people don’t really understand what it does. Want to know what all the GitHub hubbub is about? Read on to find out. The “Git” in GitHub RELATED: Version Tracking With Subversion (SVN) For Beginners To understand GitHub, you must first have an understanding of Git. Git is an open-source version control system that was started by Linus Torvalds—the same person who created Linux. Git is similar to other version control systems— So, Git is a version control system, but what does that mean? When developers create something (an app, for example), they make constant changes to the code, releasing new versions up to and after the first official (non-beta) release. Version control systems keep these revisions straight, storing the modifications in a central repository. This allows developers to easily collaborate, as they can download a new version of the software, make changes, and upload the newest revision. Every developer can see these new changes, download them, and contribute. Similarly, people who have nothing to do with the development of a project can still download the files and use them. Most Linux users should be familiar with this process, as using Git, Subversion, or some other similar method is pretty common for downloading needed files—especially in preparation for compiling a program from source code (a rather common practice for Linux geeks). What is Network Hub and How it Works?

Hub in networking plays a vital role in data transmission, and broadcasting. Hub is a hardware device used at the physical layer to connect multiple devices in the network. Hubs are widely used to connect LANs. A hub has multiple ports and it is a non-intelligent device. Unlike a switch, a hub cannot filter the data, i.e. it cannot identify the destination of the packet, so it broadcasts or send the message to each port. This is why it is known as a non-intelligent or dumb device. Hub does not have any routing table to store the data of ports and map destination addresses., the routing table is used to send/broadcast information across all the ports. Suppose there are five ports in a hub A, B, C, D, and E. consider A wants to send any data frame, or let’s say A is acting as a sender, so the hub will forward the data transmitted by A to B, C, D, E. Now, if at the same time B also wants to send the data then data received from A and B will collide and can cause data loss. In this situation, the data gets destroyed, and the hosts send a jam signal to all the hosts informing them about the collision, and each sender needs to wait for a certain amount of time. Note: In the hub, data is sent to all ports but each port accepts only that data whose destination address matches their MAC address. Types of Network Hubs: Networks hubs are of the following three types: • Active Hub: They have a power supply for regenerating, and amplifying the signals. When a port sends weak signaled d...

Difference between Hub and Switch

It is also known as a repeater as it transmits signal to every port except the port from where signal is received. Also, hubs are not that intelligent in communication and processing information for 2nd and 3rd layer. Switch: Switch is a network device which is used to enable the connection establishment and connection termination on the basis of need. Switch is operated on Data link layer. In this packet filtering is available. It is type of full duplex transmission mode and it is also called efficient bridge. Basically, it is a kind of bridge that provides better connections. It is a kind of device that set up and stop the connections according to the requirements needed at that time. It comes up with many features such as flooding, filtering and frame transmission. Difference between Hub and Switch: HUB SWITCH Physical layer of OSI model. While Data link layer of OSI Model. Hub is a broadcast type transmission. While switch is a Unicast, multicast and broadcast type transmission. Hub have 4/12 ports. While switch can have 24 to 48 ports. In hub, there is only one collision domain. While in switch, different ports have own collision domain. Hub is a half duplex transmission mode. While switch is a full duplex transmission mode. In hub, Packet filtering is not provided. While in switch, Packet filtering is provided. Hub cannot be used as a repeater. While switch can be used as a repeater. Hub is not an intelligent device that sends message to all ports hence it is compara...

Which U.S. Cities Are Major Hubs and Why it Matters

The favored model of the American airline industry since its deregulation in 1978, airport hubs have formed the backbone of the country’s present-day aviation network and marketplace. Nowadays these hub-and-spoke systems have become ubiquitous in the U.S. travel sphere, replacing most previous point-to-point models offered by airlines. By providing greater efficiency and profitability, the hub system seems here to stay, so lets took a look at how this transportation model can benefit both the airline and the passengers they carry. Why Hubs Matter for Passengers In a perfect world, every flight would be nonstop, and you'd be jetting off to your destination without any extended connection times or roundabout routings. But in that perfect world, your airfare would likely cost triple. So why do hubs matter for passengers? The almighty dollar. If airlines can reduce costs by running an efficient hub-and-spoke system, they can, in theory, pass along the savings to the customer. While airport connections aren’t always ideal, hubs allow for carriers to provide more extensive route networks, streamlined operations, and lower fares. And those low fares come in several forms. Some of the best-unadvertised savings in the entire aviation marketplace come in the form of hub attacks by competing airlines. These fare wars often instigated by rival carriers trying to undercut prices on select routes from a competitor hub airport, sometimes to the tune of hundreds of dollars. As an example,...

Differences Between a Network Hub, Switch, and Router

Updated: 06/30/2020 by Computer Hope There are three main devices that connect a computer to another computer. A network hub, switch, and router can all perform this function. It can sometimes be confusing when trying to figure out what device is currently used on a computer network, without knowing what each device does. Network hub A network In the past, network switches and routers were expensive, confusing, and hard to use for most users, and most opted for network hubs. Today, home network switches and routers are easier and cheaper to use, which is why network hubs are rarely used or found anymore. Network switch A network Network router A network Ok, but what should I buy a network hub, switch, or router? This question depends on how you plan on using your network. For most users, a wireless network router is our recommendation. A wireless router allows wireless devices (e.g., your If you only need to connect a few computers on one network, a switch is an ideal solution since they're cheaper than a router. In some situations, you may need more than one router or switch. In a big area such as an office, you may need a router to connect all computers to the Internet or another network. Using other routers, switches, and
