“I think it needs, number one, time. Number two, understanding,” sey ni Kaladkaren sa naging exclusive interview ng BANDERA in collaboration with PREEN.PH. Paliwanag pa niya, “Kailangan maintindihan nila ‘yung kalagayan ‘nung mga anak nila.” “And you know, desisyon ng magulang kasi ‘yun e at the end of the day,” ani pa ng TV host.

Is India Ready to Legalize LGBTQ Marriage?

“We have created a great life together, but where is the legitimacy to that?” Khanna tells TIME. In October, they petitioned a Delhi court for the constitutional right to marry—arguing that without official recognition, they are “strangers in law.” Their petition, along with two others, will be heard by the court starting Jan. 8, beginning what could be a years-long legal battle for marriage equality for Samir Jana–Hindustan Times/Getty Images It was work that brought Arora, a psychiatrist, and Khanna, a psychologist, together. Since 2006, they worked together at a mental health service co-founded by Arora that focuses on treating children and adolescents. In 2012, Khanna walked into Arora’s office with a cup of tea to talk about her New Year’s resolution to improve their working relationship. In the months that followed, they grew romantic, and they eventually moved in together, brought together their families and found support among friends and colleagues. At first, their lack of legal status didn’t bother them as much. By the time the supreme court struck down the colonial-era law that outlawed same-sex relations, they were already in a long-term and secure relationship. “It never felt criminal to us,” Arora says. But the ruling had a profound effect on the young LGBTQ patients Arora and Khanna see in their practice. They started getting more questions about gender and sexuality and saw greater self-acceptance and confidence, especially in people from smaller towns. “Th...

Gender, Sexuality and (Be) longing: The Representation of Queer (LGBT) in Hindi Cinema

Amity Journal of Media & Communication Studies (ISSN 2231 – 1033) Copyright 2017 by ASCO 2017, Vol. 7, No. 1 Amity University Rajasthan Gender, Sexuality and (Be) longing: The Representation of Queer (LGBT) in Hindi Cinema Pushpinder Kaur Punjabi University, India Abstract We do not yet live in a world free from homophobia, transphobia, prejudice and discrimination and we live in a world where majority wins and overpower the voices of the minority. In India, we need a space that listens to those who need to be heard. Sexual minority comprises of all those people who fall under the categories of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender and they are exactly that-a minority within our own homes, families, schools, institutions, communities, work places etc. Adding to their woes is Section 377 of the Indian penal Code which criminalises Homosexuality. Many of these problems leave many among them feeling isolated, afraid, depressed and even suicidal. So a space for LGBT is needed to look at these specific issues not from a hetero-normative perspective or with pre-conceived binary notions. LGBT is in fact short for LGBTTQQIIA+? It includes, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transexual, queer, questioning, intersex, intergender and asexuals. Films that depict reality are of supreme importance. It is also quite important that we start to desire for films that have characters belonging to the community, living a usual life, facing normal societal or personal conflicts and not disc...
