Varanasi's MP MLA court on Monday convicted jailed mafia Mukhtar Ansari in Awadhesh Rai murder case. Awadhesh Rai, Congress leader and brother of former MLA Ajay Rai, was shot dead outside Ajay Rai's residence on August 3, 1991 in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi. "I think he will be given a strict punishment," said Ajay Rai after the court's verdict which he said will be pronounced at 2 pm. Ahead of the hearing, Ajay said the wait of 32 years is going to end today and was hopeful that they will get justice." Security has been beefed up outside the court. "It was a brutal murder in broad daylight and there were two eyewitnesses who gave their statements without being afraid of Mukhtar Ansari," said the lawyer who represented Ajay Rai in the court, reported PTI. On August 3, 1991, Awadhesh was standing outside his brother Ajay's residence in Varanasi's Lahurabir area under Chetganj police station when assailants came in a Maruti van and opened fire on him. Wounded Awadhesh was admitted to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Express News Service LUCKNOW: Servicing the production warrant issued against gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Khalid Azeem aka Ashraf by Prayagraj MP/MLA court, the UP police brought both the brothers to Naini Central Jail in Prayagraj on Monday evening amid tight security arrangements. While the cavalcade of 45 cops of UP police carrying Atiq Ahmad reached Naini Central Jail at around 5:50 pm on Monday amid tight security arrangements covering a road distance of around 1200-km in 23 hours and 37 minutes, Ashraf was also brought from Bareilly jail crossing nine districts including the state capital Lucknow. Atiq was brought to Prayagraj after four years from Sabarmati Central jail in Ahmedabad in Gujarat where he was imprisoned following the Supreme Court order passed in April, 2019. Both Atiq and Ashraf will be produced physically in Prayagraj MP/MLA court at 12:30 pm on Tuesday in connection with the 2007 case of abduction of Umesh Pal who was murdered allegedly by the accomplices of Atiq including his son Asad on February 24. Congress MLA Mamta Devi along with 12 others was taken into custody on Thursday after being convicted in a case related to Inland Power Limited firing case at Gola in Ramgarh which took place in 2016. Arguments on the point of the quantum of punishment will take place on December 12. Incidentally, Mandar legislator Bandhu Tirkey had also been disqualified as a member of the Jharkhand legislative assembly after being sentenced by a special CBI court in Ranchi on March 28 for amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income during his first stint as MLA between 2005 and 2009. Tirkey had served as the Education Minister in the then Madhu Koda government. Legal experts opined that in the sections under which Mamta Devi has been held guilty by the special MP-MLA Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge-4 Pawan Kumar, there are very rare chances that she will be sentenced for less than 2 years of imprisonment, and hence, is set to lose her Assembly membership.
