70th anniversary

From past... UNESCO was founded in 1945 to develop the “intellectual and moral solidarity of mankind” as a means of building lasting peace. Its pioneering work has helped change the way people everywhere understand each other and the planet we live on. In its early years, UNESCO helped rebuild schools, libraries, and museums destroyed during World War II, and served as an intellectual forum for exchanging ideas and scientific knowledge. As newly independent countries joined between the 1950s and 1970s, it turned its attention to access to education for all girls and boys and tackling illiteracy, which remain major challenges. UNESCO led the movement to protect the environment and sounded the alert over the planet’s shrinking biodiversity. Through its “Man and the Biosphere Program”, established in 1971, it sought to reconcile both the use and conservation of natural resources. It was the first step towards sustainable development. The Nubian Temples campaign of the 1960s to save Egypt’s most famous monuments from the rising waters of the Aswan High Dam transformed approaches to cultural heritage protection and inspired the creation of the World Heritage programme, dedicated to safeguarding sites of outstanding universal value. This laid the basis for widening UNESCO action to safeguard three dimensions of heritage – tangible, intangible and documentary – and to promote respect for cultural diversity on the basis of human rights. Through the development of community radio a...

Old Town Lunenburg

Old Town Lunenburg Lunenburg is the best surviving example of a planned British colonial settlement in North America. Established in 1753, it has retained its original layout and overall appearance, based on a rectangular grid pattern drawn up in the home country. The inhabitants have managed to safeguard the city's identity throughout the centuries by preserving the wooden architecture of the houses, some of which date from the 18th century. Description is available under license Le Vieux Lunenburg Le Vieux Lunenburg offre le meilleur exemple encore existant d'un établissement colonial britannique planifié en Amérique du Nord. San Antonio Missions

San Antonio Missions The site encompasses a group of five frontier mission complexes situated along a stretch of the San Antonio River basin in southern Texas, as well as a ranch located 37 kilometres to the south. It includes architectural and archaeological structures, farmlands, residencies, churches and granaries, as well as water distribution systems. The complexes were built by Franciscan missionaries in the 18 th century and illustrate the Spanish Crown’s efforts to colonize, evangelize and defend the northern frontier of New Spain. The San Antonio Missions are also an example of the interweaving of Spanish and Coahuiltecan cultures, illustrated by a variety of features, including the decorative elements of churches, which combine Catholic symbols with indigenous designs inspired by nature. UNESCO’s Beginnings Since Wars Begin in the Minds of Men, It is in the Minds of Men that the Defences of Peace Must also be Constructed UNESCO Constitution, London, November 1945. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation came into force in 1946, in the aftermath of World War II. It was founded on the belief that a peace based exclusively on the economic and political arrangements of governments could not secure the lasting support of the peoples of the world; it had to be founded on the intellectual and moral solidarity of mankind, and advanced through educational, scientific, and cultural relations. UNESCO Today Today, UNESCO functions as a standard-setter and laboratory of ideas, acting as a clearing house for the sharing of knowledge, and promoting international cooperation among its 193 member states and 6 associate members, and helping them to build their capacity. Among its goals are the alleviation of poverty in the developing world, ending the gender disparity in education, achieving universal primary education, and helping countries to implement a national strategy for sustainable development to reverse the current loss of environmental resources by 2015. UNESCO’s Themes Currently,UNESCO's activities in the field of culture fall under three inter-related themes: • Protecting cultural diversity • Promoting ...

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

UNESCO was created as a part of the United Nations system against the background of World War II with a view to contributing to the overall efforts of the United Nations to avert future wars by promoting peace and security through the advancement and application of education, science and culture to international understanding and human welfare. After having explained the background, structure and purposes of UNESCO, this chapter proceeds to examine its mission and activities that directly and indirectly contribute to the realization of its primary objective of promotion of peace. It also looks at how UNESCO has evolved over a period of more than seven decades of its existence. Given the structure, membership and voting system of UNESCO, the Organization is bound to be affected by international political and economic undercurrents that prevail at any given time. Immediately after its creation, it became clear that the Organization’s mandate can be used to pursue political interests of groups of States. The chapter outlines some of the major political factors that have influenced policy and decision making in UNESCO: - the Cold War, decolonization and the consequent third-world majoritarianism, the Middle East imbroglio and international trade. It also gives an overview of some of the controversies with which it got entangled. Finally, it makes a critical assessment of UNESCO’s contribution to peace, security and conflict prevention. History of the Education Sector

In 1942, towards the end of the Second World War, European governments met in the United Kingdom for the Conference of Allied Ministers of Education with the aim of rebuilding their education systems when peace was restored. From this, in 1945, a UN Conference for the establishment of an educational and cultural organization was convened in London to establish the “intellectual and moral solidarity of mankind”. At the end of this conference, 37 countries founded the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) which was established by the UN General Assembly on 16 November 1945.
