Best picture winner CODA took home three, the second most of any film. Here’s a breakdown of Dune— six wins Dune secured wins for cinematography (Greig Fraser), editing (Joe Walker), score (Hans Zimmer), visual effects (Paul Lambert, Tristan Myles, Brian Connor and Gerd Nefzer), production design (Patrice Vermette; set decoration: Zsuzsanna Sipos) and sound (Mac Ruth, Mark Mangini, Theo Green, Doug Hemphill and Ron Bartlett). At an Oscars ceremony that will most likely be forever defined by the slap heard ’round the world, the winners themselves may seem comparatively predictable. CODA, the dark horse Sundance favorite that was nominated for just three awards, rode a late-breaking wave of support to walk away from the Oscars with a full three wins, including best picture. Jessica Chastain triumphed in an especially surprising best-actress race, winning out for her warm and winning performance as the title character in The Eyes of Tammy Faye. And after three acting nominations, Will Smith finally became a best-actor winner for playing another real-life character, Richard Williams, in King Richard—though his Oscar victory came after that contentious encounter with Oscar presenter Chris Rock, who was Jada Pinkett Smith. There were other highlights to the ceremony too, from the rousing performance of Wanda Sykes Troy Kotsur’s moving speech accepting his best supporting actor trophy.
