The Tower of Hanoi

Key concepts Mathematics Patterns Algorithms Puzzles Introduction Are you tired of math work sheets and homework? Did you know that there are more creative ways to exercise your mathematical muscle? A lot of games, puzzles and riddles revolve around mathematical concepts. Think about simple games such as tic-tac-toe, more strategic games such as chess or math puzzles such as sudoku. People have been playing these games and puzzles for centuries! They are fun, entertaining and sometimes useful. See how you enjoy this one. Background Throughout history mathematics has fulfilled many practical needs such as measuring plots of land, studying astronomy and calculating taxes. But math can also be used for entertainment—mathematical games, riddles, challenges and puzzles are also interwoven throughout history! The tower of Hanoi (also called the tower of Brahma or the Lucas tower) was invented by a French mathematician Édouard Lucas in the 19th century. It is associated with a legend of a Hindu temple where the puzzle was supposedly used to increase the mental discipline of young priests. In the legend the young priests were given 64 gold disks stacked neatly on one of three posts. Each disk rested on a slightly larger disk. The priests' goal was to re-create the stack on a different post by moving disks, one at a time, to another post with the rule that a larger disk could never be placed on top of a smaller disk. Using mathematics, you can calculate that even when the priests f...

Tower of Hanoi

Tower of Hanoi, also called Towers of Hanoi or Towers of Brahma, The typical toy set consists of three pegs fastened to a stand and of eight disks, each having a hole in the centre. The disks, all of different radii, are initially placed on one of the pegs, with the largest disk on the bottom and the smallest on top. The task is to transfer the stack to one of the other pegs subject to two rules: only individual disks may be moved, and no disk may be placed on a smaller disk. number game: The Tower of Hanoi It can be shown that for a tower of n disks, there will be required 2 n−1 transfers of individual disks to shift the tower completely to another peg. Thus for 8 disks, the puzzle requires 2 8−1, or 255 transfers. If the original “needle” (peg) was a tower with 64 disks, the number of transfers would be 2 64−1, or 18,446,744,073,709,551,615; this is exactly the same number required to fill an 8×8 checkerboard with grains of wheat, 1 on the first square, 2 on the second, 4 on the next, then 8, 16, 32, and so forth. Who is Brahma?

According to Hinduism, Brahma is a god who created the world and everything in the world. He is one of the trinity gods of Hinduism, the other two being Shiva and Vishnu. Brahma is the creator, Vishnu is the sustainer and Shiva is the destroyer. However, Brahma is regarded as the most senior of the gods. Brahma is considered the father of dharma, which means "righteousness." Brahma is believed to have created himself and, hence, is called Swayambhu, which means "self-manifested." He is also called Pitamaha, Hiranyagarbha and Viswakarma. Pitamaha means "father of fathers," Hiranyagarbha means "golden fetus" and Viswakarma means "architect of the universe." Brahma has four heads that look in four directions and has four hands. It is said that the four Vedas were born out of his four heads. He sits on the lotus flower assuming padmasana, or "lotus pose." According to a purana, or "ancient text," Brahma originally had five heads. One of his heads was cut off by Shiva who got angry with Brahma when he lied to him. The white swan in which Brahma moves about represents intelligence and the ability to make the right decisions. Here is the significance of all that is associated with the image of Brahma: • The four heads of Brahma symbolizes that he possesses all knowledge required to create the world. • The four aspects of personality of human beings - namely, the mind, intellect, ego and conditioned consciousness - are referred to by the four hands of Brahma. • The white beard of ...
