Aditha Karikalan & Nandini Devi In 'Ponniyin Selvan 2,' Explained: Were They Destined To Be Apart?

The first movie only lets the audience know of the hatred Aditha and Nandini have for each other. This would mean these characters knew each other, as shown in very first montage of Ponniyin Selvan 2 and there was the love they shared that was snatched away from them at the peak of their relationship. Nandini remembers Aditha as the only one who killed Verapandiyan, who was her sole protector. Even though Nandini asked for mercy and begged for the life of the only man who made sure Nandini had shelter over her head, Aditha brutally killed him. Nandini never got over the fact that the man she loved killed the person who took her in as his own. He could have chosen not to kill Verapandiyan if he had truly loved Nandini. But he went ahead and killed him anyway. Aditha, on the other hand, was angered to see Nandini taking care of the man who was his kingdom’s sworn enemy. Years later, after their separation, Aditha is enraged to see Nandini in the Pandiyan camp taking care of the one man he wants to kill, and he does. Aditha’s rage towards Nandini was because of her act of serving the enemy when she should have been with him. His rage comes from the fact that he never knew why she left him. Nandini’s rage comes from the fact that she was raised by Veerapandiyan just when she was thrown out by the Cholas. There was never any closure between the two on why they separated. This led to their rage being amplified, which stems from the fact that they had shared a deep love for one a...

Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan Vs Mani Ratnam’s adaptation: 5 crucial differences

Even as a seventy-year wait to see Ponniyin Selvan on screen has come to an end, PS 2, the second part of Mani Ratnam’s adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s novel, has led to a lot of discussions on the creative liberties taken with it. Mani Ratnam co-wrote the two-part film with Elango Kumaravel and Jeyamohan, and as was only to be expected, the team has done away with several episodes and characters from the novel to condense the vast material into two films. While many fans of Ponniyin Selvan have made their peace with the film adaptation, others are upset that some of the most important connections and twists in the novel were dropped. The conclusion of the succession battle in the Chola kingdom, especially, came as a shocker. In the novel and in the film, it is Madhurantakan who is crowned the king, and in real-life history too, Sundara Chola was succeeded by his cousin Madhurantakan (also known as Uttama Chola) and not his sons. But there is a crucial difference between Kalki’s novel and Mani Ratnam’s film – in the former, the Madhurantakan who is crowned isn’t the same person who went against Sundara Chola and his children in the succession battle. There is a ‘new’ Madhurantakan who is identified as the true heir to the throne. In the film version, this plot thread is completely obliterated. Here’s a look at some of the crucial differences between the novel and the PS films. Read: Ponniyin Selvan 2 review: A fantastic Vikram makes this a worthy sequel 1. Madhurantaka...

Ponniyin Selvan main characters (and movie cast)

Before my kids watched the movie, I wanted to share my know-how of the characters… since there are many of them, and often related in multiple ways. The map has important locations in the story • Sundara Chola (actor Prakash Raj), the emperor is unwell, and stays within his palace in Thanjavur(check map) with his wife Vanavan Mahadevi. His father Arinjaya and uncle Gandaraditya (elder) are no more. Gandaraditya has a son Madhurantakar (actor Rahman) through his wife Sembiyan Mahadevi (actor Jayachitra). Usually, the elder son becomes king. But before he died, Gandaraditya passed on the kingdom to Sundara Chola (his younger brother’s son) and also said Sundara Chola’s sons should succeed him. He specifically said that his own son Madhurantakar should not become king, and made his wife promise. His wife Sembiyan Mahadevi brought up Madhurantakar as a Shiva bhakta and gave him no martial training. She wants Madhurantakar to stay away from the throne. Sundara Chola and many others look up to Sembiyan Mahadevi (a.k.a. Periya Piratti) for advice. Sundara Chola has 3 children as listed below. • Aditha Karikalan (actor Vikram) is Sundara Chola’s eldest son. A brave warrior since his early age, he has won several important battles for the Chola dynasty, and is known to have beheaded Veerapandiyan (actor Nassar) a Pandya king. He lives in Kanchipuram (check top of map) with his maternal grandfather Malayaman (actor Lal) who still goes to war with him. However, Aditha could never ove...

Karikalan’s Death to Mandakini’s Truth: Writer Kumaravel On Ponniyin Selvan 2 In 5 Scenes

The release of Ponniyin Selvan 2 tied up a lot of loose ends, and in the process, transported readers and non-readers of Kalki’s magnum opus into its world of complicated succession, hurt egos, grief and whirlwind romances. While PS-2— now out on Amazon Prime Video — stayed true to the fates of most characters in the book (including Kundavai and Vanthiyathevan’s romance, The most significant change in the film was that of Madhurantakan’s coronation. In the book, Madhurantakan and Nandini are twins and in fact Kumaravel, who co-wrote the screenplay along with Jeyamohan and Ratnam, feels it would’ve been confusing to take viewers through this strand of plot. “In the book, the babies are swapped and Sembiyan Mahadevi knows that her baby grows up away from her and yet lets it happen. Kalki established this in various instances. His explanation for switching Madhurantakan and Senthan Amudhan was that nobody would have seen both of them, so the people wouldn't realise it. But this wouldn't be apt to depict in the film.” In case they had included this in the film, it would’ve raised a big question in the minds of viewers, he says. "When you knew your baby was alive, why didn't you bring him to the kingdom?" And how does she accept a flower seller as a king?” Instead, the team stuck to depicting what unravelled In history. “In reality, it was because of Madhurantakan's upheaval that Sundara Chola (Prakash Raj) steps down and makes him the king. So we thought we could retain the sa...
