Sourav Ganguly Set To Replace Ricky Ponting As Delhi Capitals' Head Coach In IPL 2024

Former Indian captain and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, who was the Director of Cricket for the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023, is all set to replace former Australian captain Ricky Ponting as the new head coach of the franchise. According to a report published in a Bengali media outlet, the 50-year-old will be DC's head coach in IPL 2024. Ponting, who won the IPL title as head coach with the Mumbai Indians in 2015, has been associated with the Delhi Capitals since IPL 2018, and under his mentorship, Delhi reached the final of the IPL for the first time in the 2020 season. In 2021, DC finished at the top of the points table but lost both qualifiers. But in the last two seasons, Delhi has failed to reach the playoffs. They finished fifth in IPL 2022 and ninth this year. Ponting, who featured for Kolkata Knight Riders and Pune Warriors India as a player during the initial seasons of the IPL, was the Director of Cricket for DC in the 2019 season, well before he joined the BCCI as President. In that season, Delhi performed well under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy and secured a place in the playoffs. After taking charge of BCCI, Ganguly had to leave his role, but he remained on good terms with DC owners and players, which is why after he was removed from the role of BCCI president last year, he re-joined the side ahead of the cash-rich league this year.

Not Prithvi Shaw! Delhi Capitals appoint another Indian player as vice

Delhi Capitals on Thursday (March 17) took to Twitter to announce David Warner as their new captain for IPL 2023. Along with Warner, they have also named a new vice captain for the upcoming season of the cash-rich league. While it was expected that Prithvi Shaw would be considered for the role, the franchise's decision has surprised many. Shaw was among the probable candidates to replace Pant as skipper because of his good record as a captain in domestic and age-group cricket. He helped the India U-19 team win the World Cup in 2019 and then, as a captain of Mumbai, led them to the Vijay Hazare title in the 2020–21 season. He was also the captain of the Mumbai Ranji team that reached the Ranji Trophy final last year. But despite all that, he was ignored not only for the captaincy but also for Warner’s deputy role. Instead of him, Indian all-rounder Axar has never held any leadership positions in the IPL for Delhi before. The Gujarat cricketer joined the DC set-up ahead of the 2019 season and has been an integral member of the squad since then. He has impressed with his batting and bowling on a number of occasions and will enter this year’s IPL on the back of scoring the third-most runs in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Warner was bought by Sunrirsers Hyderabad in 2014 and appointed the captain a year later. In 2016, Warner took Sunrisers to the title. Warner is the joint-fifth most successful captain, in terms of matches won: in 69 matches he led, Warner's teams won 35, lost 32, and tied two matches. Captaincy never burdened Warner the batter and numbers support that claim: he has 2840 runs at an average of 47.33 and a strike rate of 142.28 with one century and 26 fifties. Ironically, though, it was his weak batting form in the first half of the 2021 IPL that forced Sunrisers to bench him, before he was replaced as captain by Kane Williamson. It resulted in a bitter fallout between Warner and Sunrisers, who released him ahead of the 2022 mega auction, where the Capitals bagged him for INR 6.25 crore ($762,000 approx then). Warner endured a difficult first half of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, during which he had to return home after b...
