Wimbledon 2022: Elena Rybakina battles from set down to beat Ons Jabeur for her first Grand Slam title

History was on the line at Centre Court at Wimbledon and it was Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina who came out on top against Tunisia's Ons Jabeur, winning her first Grand Slam title. Jabeur was the first Arab woman and first African-born player to reach a Grand Slam final, while Rybakina -- who was born in Russia -- is the first player representing Kazakhstan to win a Grand Slam after switching to represent that country in 2018. Rybakina is also the first woman to win Wimbledon after losing the first set (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) since Amelie Mauresmo came back from a set down to beat Justine Henin in the 2006 Ladies' final. Also, ranked No. 23 in the world, Rybakina is the lowest ranked woman to win Wimbledon since Venus Williams won at the All England Club for the fourth time as the No. 31 player in the world. The story of the match was the enormous momentum swing after the first set. Jabeur controlled the first set with poise and her drop shots, forcing Rybakina to come to the net, where she looked uncomfortable early. Jabeur's movement, coupled with her precision close to the net led her to a 6-3 first set win. Rybakina also had to shake of some early nerves, getting less than 50 percent of the points on her first serves in in the first set. The massive turnaround hinged on two things -- Rybakina won 70 percent of her first serve points for the remainder of the match, and she wound up winning 17 of 36 points at the net. While not a great percentage, she'd looked out of answers for Ja...

Wimbledon 2022 results: Novak Djokovic survives huge scare to reach semifinals in five sets against Jannik Sinner

Novak Djokovic admitted a pep talk he gave himself during a toilet break was pivotal as the top seed survived a huge scare to beat Jannik Sinner 5-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 and reach the semifinals of Wimbledon 2022. Djokovic remains on course for a fourth successive SW19 title and his first major of the calendar year after recovering from losing the opening two sets against the hugely impressive 20-year-old Italian. "Comparing the first set two sets with the final three, we had two different matches," Djokovic told BBC Sport after being taken the maximum distance in a match at Wimbledon for the first time since his epic win over Roger Federer in the 2019 final. 84 - Novak "He was the better player for two sets. I went out, had a toilet break and a little pep talk in the mirror. Sometimes in these circumstances, when not much is happening positively for you on the court and the other guy is dominating, these things are necessary. The toilet break was the turning point." There was no sign of the drama ahead when Sinner, who was knocked out in the first round in his only previous appearance in the main draw in 2021, produced two unforced errors and a double fault to help Djokovic immediately break his serve. From 4-1 ahead, the sluggish-looking six-time Wimbledon champion then produced a succession of uncharacteristic blunders as Sinner won six of the ensuing seven games to take the first set. Sinner's success was not simply down to generosity from a rival 15 years his senior. A...

Wimbledon 2022 results: Full list of Day 1 scores as Djokovic dodges upset and Hurkacz crashes out

WIMBLEDON — For a period it was barely possible to identify which of the players opening on Centre Court was the six-time The pained expression of Djokovic’s coach Goran Ivanisevic told the story of the early afternoon under the Wimbledon roof. Djokovic has not lost here since 2017. Since he is denied entry to the United States, Wimbledon represents his last opportunity this year to extend his grand slam total to 21, which would by definition puncture the attempt by rival In other words this means a lot. Evidently it also meant plenty to Kwon, who showed nil inhibition in only his second appearance at Wimbledon. He owed his Centre Court posting to the luck of a draw that placed him as the defending champion’s “opponent”. Well someone’s got to do it, and the South Korean would not be shy in giving it a go, racing into a 3-1 lead. Once again he fell 3-1 behind yet this time there would be no recovery. In ten previous matches on grass Kwon had won five. To be temporarily boxing the ears of the game’s greatest exponent on this surface was an unexpected bonus. He held on to the break to see out the set and level the match.
