However, there is debate over how many species of wolf exist and if there are different subspecies of the gray wolf. Additionally, there is a little-known canid, which lives in the Ethiopian highlands called Canis simensis that is thought to be a very close relative of the wolf. Every living thing on earth has a unique sci...

Wolf Anatomy

WOLF PHYSICAL APPEARANCES The body of a wolf allows it to be able to survive in a variety of different locations. The bodies of these animals are built for ultimate survival. It allows for them to be able to run fast, to track prey, and to take down large animals. They can have thick fur that is a variety of colors. The colors can include white, tan, brown, black, and gray. They are known to have beautiful eye colors like sky blue or chocolate brown. When it comes to their colors and their sizes, they have a huge range from one end to the other. There are two types of hair that a wolf grows. The undercoat is very close to the skin. It helps to offer a waterproof barrier so that the body can stay warm and the overall temperature is regulated. The guards are the hairs on the outer layers that we see while looking at a wolf. The thickness of both of these coats depends on the climate and the time of the year. Scent glands are found in the fur, along the tail. This feature allows them to mark their territory. Even though the body of a wolf may seem very thin overall, it is full of thick muscles. The scrawny appearance of the legs and the head can give a false impression that they aren’t a force to be reckoned with. The chest region is very slender so that the animal has a full range of movement. Most experts believe they have more range than any other type of animal. The overall size will depend on the location, as well as the species of wolf that you are talking about. Some a...

Grey Wolf

Habits and Lifestyle Grey wolves are social animals, living, hunting, and traveling in packs. An average wolf pack consists of 7-8 individuals, including the alpha male and female with their young as well as older offspring. The alphas are the leaders of the pack, establishing the group's territory, selecting the den sites, tracking down, and hunting prey. They live in close ties with the members of their pack, communicating with each other through a wide variety of calls, including barks, whines, howls, and growls. Grey wolves are nocturnal predators. They move around their territory when hunting, using the same trails for extended periods. These follow the banks of rivers, the shorelines of lakes, and ravines overgrown with shrubs, plantations, roads, and human paths. Grey wolves do not actually howl at the moon; they tend to howl when the night is lighter, which usually happens during the full moon. Throughout the year, these animals undergo stationary and nomadic phases: the stationary phase takes place in the spring and summer months, when they grow up young, while the nomadic phase lasts from autumn to winter. Grey wolves prefer moving at night, being able to travel up to 200 km (124 miles) per day. Within a pack, only the alpha male and female breed. The alphas are monogamous, mating for life until one of the mates dies, after which a new alpha male or female is determined, and the pair is re-established. Grey wolves breed from January to April. The female is respon...

Wolf

The misunderstood wolf: Most of us grew up hearing stories about the "big, bad wolf." But wolves are not really big or bad. They aren’t even harmful to humans! Wolves belong to the same family of animals, Canidae, as the dog you may have as a family pet. In some places they are considered a vulnerable or endangered species. There are many wolf organizations and government agencies working to both save wolves and educate people about them. There are many stories of wolves being "wild dogs" that can be tamed. While wolves and dogs do share many biological traits, they are very different from each other. The dogs we have as pets have been bred to be gentle companion animals to humans. Wolves are still wild animals and should be treated as such. Sometimes wolves and dogs interbreed, and the pups are called wolf hybrids. However, these hybrids usually do not make good pets. There is another myth that some dog breeds, like the husky, are part wolf. But huskies are just another domestic dog breed, like a poodle or a golden retriever. Wolves vary physically from one another. Desert dwellers like the Ethiopian wolf may weigh only 25 pounds (11 kilograms), but northern gray wolves like the tundra and Arctic wolf subspecies can reach 136 pounds (62 kilograms). Their coat color runs the full black-white color spectrum, with tan and reddish brown thrown in as well. There are two wolf species in North America, the gray and the red. Gray wolves are the most widespread, inhabiting parts o...

Report: Isle Royale wolf pups born to several litters as population rises

This image was taken the morning of 24 January 2023 and shows wolves from the East Pack shortly after they killed a moose near the shoreline by Chippewa Harbor. That morning, all 11 members of the East Pack were resting in small clearings on a ridgetop, just a few hundred meters away from the kill site. Fresh tracks and blood in the snow suggest that the wolves had recently chased the moose down toward the shoreline and killed it, as opposed to having scavenged the carcass. New research suggests wolf pups have been born and there are several wolf packs on Isle Royale on Lake Superior. The annual report about wolves and moose on Isle Royale was published Wednesday by Michigan Tech University. The report details information about the wolf and moose population on the remote island in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. According to the report, in February 2023, the wolf population was likely composed of 31 wolves, an 11% increase from last year's estimate of 28 wolves. Those wolves are spread into an east pack that has 11 wolves, a west pack that has five wolves, three groups of at least three wolves each and several others that are either loners or loosely affiliated with a smaller group. The report also said there is evidence that pups were born into three, possibly four, litters in April 2022. According to the report, there were no litters born between 2015-2018, one litter born in 2019, two in 2020 and 2021 and possibly four in 2022. Wolves were relocated to Isle Royale between 2...
