Why is Drake involved in the XXXTentacion murder trial?

Drake and his attorneys are opposing a court order for him to appear for a deposition as a part of the ongoing jury trial for the murder of Florida rapper XXXTentacion. XXXTentacion, born Jahseh Onfroy, was Mauricio Padilla, a defense attorney for Dedrick Williams, one of the men accused in the killing, has been trying since December to get Drake to appear at a deposition prior to the trial, which started last week. He is claiming the Toronto rapper avoided his scheduled deposition. The court agreed and is now ordering Drake to appear for the deposition later this month. However, the “Nice for What” performer and his attorneys are fighting the order, saying it places an “unreasonable and oppressive” burden on Drake. As three men are standing trial in Florida’s Broward County for the 2018 killing, court filings obtained by The Times show how and why the A-list rapper was pulled into the murder case in the first place. A Timeline of Rapper XXXTentacion's Abuse Allegations

[ ] Rapper XXXTentacion, a Broward County musician named Jahseh Onfroy, has a startling history of alleged physical and verbal abuse toward women. New Timeslast week published a startling look at Onfroy's career: In a long-form profile, reporter Tarpley Hitt spoke to both Onfroy, who is living in his Parkland home on house arrest, as well as Onfroy's alleged victim and former girlfriend, Geneva Ayala. While Onfroy was happy to share his thoughts about why he doesn't like feminism, Ayala went public with allegations of horrid abuse — including being smacked in the face, held under water, trapped by Onfroy's own threats of suicide, and nearly tortured by having a barbecue fork shoved into her genitals. Here's a history of how XXXTentacion rose to fame in Florida despite his long history of brutal allegations: 1. The controversial rapper emerged onto the public stage in early 2017, when a single he uploaded to SoundCloud burst out of underground music circles and into the mainstream. The track was short, distorted like most of his songs, and named an imperative "Look at Me!" But as listeners and media took his instruction to heart, they uncovered details about Onfroy's past, including the brutal allegations of domestic abuse. When the claims surfaced, the singer joined a lineup of controversial male figures, from Chris Brown to Harvey Weinstein, whose accusations of abuse have spurred a national conversation about an age-old question: Can great art be separated from problema...

Perhaps the most controversial and polarizing rapper to transition from internet fame to the mainstream spotlight, XXXTENTACION calls his debut LP, 17, “A collection of nightmares, thoughts, and real-life situations I've lived." Sparse guitars and sullen melodies all but replace rap on this startlingly pained look inside the harrowing mind of a person for whom art and artist are impossibly intertwined. “Depression & Obsession,” “Save Me,” and “Dead Inside” are overwhelmingly melancholic, while the piano ballad “Orlando” addresses the Florida rapper’s lowest point head-on. XXXTENTACION

[Intro] I think I, I think I finally Found a way to forgive myself From mistakes I made in my past I think that's the first step, right? You agree? [Verse] I've dug two graves for us, my dear Can't pretend that I was perfect, leavin' you in fear Oh, man, what a world, the things I hear If I could act on my revenge, then, oh, would I? Some kill, some steal, some break your heart And you thought that I would let it go and let you walk Well, broken hearts break bones, so break up fast And I don't wanna let it go, so in my grave I'll rot I've dug two graves for us, my dear Can't pretend that I was perfect, leavin' you in fear Oh, man, what a world, the things I hear If I could act on my revenge, then, oh, would I? Some kill, some steal, some break your heart And you thought that I would let it go and let you walk Broken hearts break bones, so break up fast And I don't wanna let it go, so in my grave I'll rot [Chorus] In my grave, I'll rot In my grave, I'll rot In my grave, I'll rot-ot-ot In my grave, I'll rot In my grave, I'll rot-ot-ot In my grave, I'll rot

The Violent Life and Shocking Death of XXXTentacion

On Monday, an eyewitness video obtained by TMZ circulated on social media, showing Jahseh Onfroy, better known as the artist XXXTentacion, slumped in the driver’s seat of his black BMW outside of a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach, Florida. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Onfroy had been shot in broad daylight. He was confirmed dead at a local hospital a short while later. The killers made off with a Louis Vuitton bag. (On Wednesday night a twenty-two-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.) Onfroy lived his short life chaotically, violently. And his Onfroy was born in Plantation, Florida, in 1998, and raised in Broward County, primarily by his grandmother. His mother was a teen-ager when she had him, and she drifted in and out of his life, bringing lavish gifts and leaving sizable voids. Onfroy said, in an interview with the podcast “No Jumper,” in 2016, that he would instigate fights in grade school as a ploy to get her attention. In a recent interview with the Miami New Times, Onfroy spent his late childhood and adolescence in and out of juvenile-detention centers, for charges ranging from robbery to assault. He spent the rest of his time in the basements and studios of friends, where he assembled the scraps and fragments of his psyche into paeans to disaffection, to his depression, to Xanax and the numbing it brought, and to women, whom he viewed as devourers of his soul.
