Celebrating 35 years of youth changing the world, Global Youth Service Day (April 28-30, 2023) is the longest-running annual youth participation event in the world and the only one that asks all youth ages 5-25 to find meaning and purpose by working together for the common good. Pope Francis' itinerary for World Youth Day 2023

By Francesca Merlo The Holy See Press Office on Tuesday, 6 June, released Pope Francis' schedule for the 2023 World Youth Day, to take place from 1 to 6 August 2023 in Lisbon, Portugal. Over 400,000 young people have registered to take part in the event on 1-6 August 2023. In a video message released earlier this month, the Holy Father said that the desire of these young people to travel to the Portuguese capital later this year fills him with joy. Accepting the invitation of the civil and ecclesiastical authorities of Portugal, Pope Francis will travel to Lisbon and Fatima in August to take part in World Youth Day 2023. Pope Francis has presided over four World Youth Days, having previously done so in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2013; Krakow, Poland, in 2016; and Panama City, Panama, in 2019. World Youth Day in Lisbon will be the 37th, and was originally scheduled to take place in the Portuguese capital in 2022, but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. For this year's WYD's motto, Pope Francis has chosen a passage from Luke's Gospel: "Mary arose and went with haste" (Lk 1:39), which opens the account of the Visitation, when Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth following the angel’s announcement to the Blessed Mother that she would be the mother of the Son of God. Dates for World Youth Day 2023 in Lisbon announced

The world’s largest gathering of Catholic young people will take place on Aug. 1-6, 2023. Making the announcement on Oct. 3, Cardinal Manuel Clemente, the Patriarch of Lisbon, World Youth Day was established by Pope John Paul II in 1985. The week-long gathering usually attracts hundreds of thousands of young people. The international event is typically held on a different continent every three years with the presence of the pope. Pope Francis announced that the Portuguese capital would host the global Catholic gathering of young people at the closing Mass of the last international World Youth Day in Panama City in January 2019. Lisbon, a city of 505,000 people, is around 75 miles from Fatima, one of the most visited Marian pilgrimage sites in the world. International Youth Day on August 12 focuses on the difficulties that some young people are experiencing throughout the world. Half the children between the age of six and 13 lack basic reading and math skills and childhood poverty is still a prevalent problem globally. International Youth Day was created by the UN to help draw awareness to these issues as we strive to find solutions. It’s a day for reflection but also a day for taking action so get involved. It’s an initiative that honors the traits of young people and that acknowledges the challenges that today’s fledging youth face.
