Can Zomato shares continue to whet investor appetite?

In the quarter ended March, Zomato reported a notable increase in its contribution margin. The online food delivery company’s contribution profit as a percentage of gross order value increased to 5.8% from 5.1% in the December quarter. But as the subscription packages gain traction, there is a risk to margins. This is because such programs offer unlimited free deliveries subject to certain conditions. Having said that, subscription packages are crucial to boost ordering frequency. Zomato launched its membership program, Zomato Gold in late January. “In our view, the differential pricing of packages will aid higher contribution margin on these orders, as customers with higher ordering frequencies will be charged a higher package price," said analysts at Kotak Institutional Equities in a report on 12 June. “While the attractiveness of the Zomato Gold or Swiggy One package may come down for these customers, we believe they will still be better off than the scenario of no subscription at all," added the broking firm. Meanwhile, Zomato’s quick commerce business, Blinkit is currently in the red, though the rate of losses has been declining. “After peaking in 2022, competitive intensity in quick commerce seems to be receding, with BigBasket veering toward 45-60 minute delivery model and Jiomart scaling down its services offered via Dunzo," said the Kotak report.
