Notorious ‘Anonymous’ Hacker Nabbed in Mexico, Deported to U.S.

A group of homeless men and women in California were protesting the city of Santa Cruz’s decades-old prohibition against overnight encampments in August 2010 when police officers attempted to disband the rally by detaining the protesters. Among those arrested was Christopher Doyon, then a 45-year-old vagabond, according to local press reports. Doyon -- who goes by the online moniker “Commander X” -- also happened to be a member of the hacking group, Anonymous, and three months after the protest, someone knocked out Santa Cruz County’s website, according to a 2011 federal indictment unsealed Monday.

How Anonymous Picks Targets, Launches Attacks, and Takes Powerful Organizations Down

The success of Anonymous without leaders is pretty easy to understand—if you forget everything you think you know about how organizations work. Anonymous is a classic “do-ocracy,” to use a phrase that’s popular in the open source movement. As the term implies, that means rule by sheer doing: Individuals propose actions, others join in (or not), and then the Anonymous flag is flown over the result. Giles Revell No one but Hector Xavier Monsegur can know why or when he became Sabu, joining the strange and chaotic Internet collective known as Anonymous. But we know the moment he gave Sabu up. On June 7, 2011, federal agents came to his apartment on New York's Lower East Side and threatened the 28-year-old with an array of charges that could add up to 124 years in prison. So Hector Monsegur, who as Sabu had become a mentor and icon to fellow members of Anonymous, surrendered his online identity to a new, equally faceless and secretive master: the FBI. Also in this issue For the next eight months, Sabu continued to rage across the Internet as a core member of AntiSec, a blackhat hacking group within Anonymous. He helped to deface government and corporate websites and even helped bring down the private intelligence firm Stratfor—all, apparently, with the FBI's blessing as it quietly gathered logs on Monsegur's fellow "anons." Law enforcement officials later told Fox News that Monsegur was working out of the FBI offices "almost daily" in the weeks after he pleaded guilty in Augus...

Founder of hacker group Anonymous reveals his ultimate 'end

Since its peak in the early 2010s, Anonymous mostly faded from the public eye after a series of arrests, but a new generation seems to be taking up the mantle. For example, earlier this year, a person identifying as Anonymous leaked hundreds of gigabytes of internal police files from more than 200 agencies in what was called the #BlueLeaks. So what happened to the original crew? Cottle, who does software engineering contract work these days, talked about where his focus currently lies while answering questions on Reddit this week in an “Ask Me Anything” session that has gone viral. “Right now my only end-goal is bringing the QAnon game to a conclusion,” he explained to a growing number of Redditors tuning into the AMA. “For the last several months my one and only focus has been on QAnon. I more or less abandoned everything I was doing for this.” QAnon has risen to prominence during Trump’s presidency, with its followers adhering to a conspiracy theory bent on sowing distrust in democratic institutions. According to the group’s completely unsubstantiated lore, a cabal of global elites control world governments, the banking system, the Catholic Church, the media, etc. Famously, QAnon early on promoted the idea of the “deep state” consisting of a group of pedophiles associated with the Pizzagate conspiracy theory. Trump, in their view, is uniquely qualified to bring these elites to justice. How exactly does Cottle plan on bringing them down? By “pulling the mask off the charl...
