James Gunn confirms Blue Beetle is "first DC character" in new film universe

Jerod Harris // Getty Images The film follows Blue Beetle also stars Bruna Marquezine, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza and Susan Sarandon, with Angel Manuel Soto directing. Directed by Angel Manuel Soto, Blue Beetle will be the first DC Studios movie to be centred on a Latino character. Maridueña previously opened up about this, explaining Warner Bros. "We see some of these other superheroes, who are able to hide from their family the fact that they're a superhero, but [Jaime's] family is right there, on that first transformation," Maridueña said. "To come through this journey together is something that we haven't seen before in superhero movies, and that really is the beating heart of this movie. Although this was my first time being a superhero and coming into a character like this, it can't happen without the family." He continued: "That theme, whether or not you're Latino, transcends ethnicity and color of skin because that's something that we can all relate to. That's been the most exciting part. Although it is undeniably and unapologetically Latino, everyone will understand. Everyone understands Jaime." Blue Beetle will be released in cinemas on August 18.

Blue Beetle Trailer: DC Superhero Played by Xolo Maridueña

Blue Beetle – Official Trailer As you can see in the trailer, Blue Beetle is very focused on family and that was a key dynamic for the filmmakers. “One of the things that we really wanted to do with the cast was to be able to be as authentic as we can,” Soto, who was born and raised in Puerto Rico, said. “Not the Hallmark, cookie-cutter Latinos. Something that feels like, ‘Yeah, that’s my uncle. I can totally relate...’ That for me, as a director, is probably the most satisfying thing. Being able to to get an authentic chemistry from a collective that feels like something I grew up with.” “We see some of these other superheroes who are able to hide from their family the fact that they’re a superhero,” Maridueña added. “But, I mean, as you guys just saw in the trailer, his family is right there on that first transformation ... So to come through this journey together is something that I think we haven’t seen before in superhero movies. And that really is the beating heart of this movie.” Though Jamie Reyes and his family are the beating heart of Blue Beetle, the film isn’t beholden to just his version of Blue Beetle. Reyes, of course, is the most recent iteration of the character but in older comics, Blue Beetle has been Dan Garrett and Ted Kord too. Soto described his approach to the character as less a direct adaptation of Reyes’ story, and more a “greatest hits” of cool Blue Beetle stuff from all takes on the character. “There is a lot of great stuff in all of the differ...

Blue Beetle Trailer Breakdown: 10 Details Explained

The trailer opens with Xolo Maridueña as our hero, Jaime Reyes. Introduced in the comics in 2006 and created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner, Jaime is the third hero in DC canon to take on the mantle of the Blue Beetle. Much younger than his predecessors in the role (Dan Garrett and Ted Kord, more on them later), Jaime’s story radically overhauled the Blue Beetle concept. In the comics, Jaime’s early adventures take place in El Paso, Texas—but the movie has created a fictional city, Palmera, to root the character in. Palmera City also very recently became DC Comics canon in the pages of the current miniseries Blue Beetle: Graduation Day, by Josh Trujillo, Adrian Gutierrez, and Wil Quintana. Although the movie starts with Jaime working in the hotel industry, it looks like he’ll quickly be put in the orbit of Kord Industries—a major DC company with connections to Blue Beetle’s comic book legacy thanks to its founder, the second Blue Beetle, Ted Kord. Actually an acronym for “Kord Omniversal Research and Development,” Kord Industries is a scientific and technological corporation akin to STAR Labs in the DC Universe. While in most of its history Ted has directly led Kord Industries himself, most recently in the comics, and in the Blue Beetle movie, it’s managed by his sister, Victoria. Jaime is given a mysterious package to safeguard with his life in an innocuous hamburger box—which in and of itself is a DC Comics reference. Big Belly Burger has appeared in DC s...

Originally slated for an HBO Max release, Blue Beetle got bumped up to a theatrical release in the same Batgirl get the axe. The scarab gives Reyes a suit of high-powered armor that can withstand space travel and also shoot various armaments. Sort of a Venom-meets–Iron Man situation, if some MCU points of reference help. Within both the movie and the DC Comics unvierse, Reyes is the third Blue Beetle, following Dan Garrett and Ted Kord. Susan Sarandon will also star, playing the villainous original character Victoria Kord, who’s other Blue Beetle Ted’s sister. Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, What We Do in the Shadows’ Harvey Guillén, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo will round out the cast.
