Just when squash lovers were wondering if the 2022 Commonwealth Games would see the two leading ladies of Indian squash returning empty handed, Dipika Pallikal Karthik tweaked the script. With her brother-in-law Saurav Ghosal as partner, the mixed pair won the bronze, by winning the third-place play off. Dipika thus earned her fourth overall medal in the squash competitions of the CWG. Sadly, Joshna Chinappa had no such luck and overall had a forgettable time in the Games this time, unable to find a medal-winning path in singles, doubles (with Dipika) or mixed doubles (with Harinder Pal Sandhu). She last played in the US Open, a PSA Platinum Tour event in Philadelphia in October 2018. The first Indian to be ranked 10th in the world [in 2012], she is now ranked 351st. She again incurred a knee injury in Egypt where she went to practice early this year. Reigning world women’s and mixed doubles champions Dipika Pallikal will lead the nine-member Indian squash team at the Dipika Pallikal will partner Joshna Chinappa in women’s doubles and Saurav Ghosal in the mixed doubles. Dipika Pallikal has not featured in competitive singles since 2019 and expectedly, will play only in doubles at Birmingham 2022. Joshna Chinappa and Saurav Ghosal, meanwhile, are India’s best bets in their respective singles categories at the CWG 2022. World No. 15 Saurav Ghosal is India’s top-ranked men’s player. Blessed with twins last October, the 31-year-old has been training hard for the last couple of months with the focus on the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games later this year. Pallikal, who established an interior designing business in her time away from the game, is aiming to create more history at the two multi-sporting events. She is expected to take part in the doubles events in the Birmingham Games before gradually increasing her workload to also play singles in the Hangzhou Games. Pallikal and India's highest ranked player Joshna Chinappa had won India's first ever gold in CWG history at the Glasgow edition back in 2014. Speaking to PTI on motherhood and comeback, Pallikal said she was fortunate to have had a support system which allowed her to take time off from the game back in 2018.
