Net Metering vs. Net Billing

In a perfect world, your home’s solar system would precisely meet your electricity demands – nothing more and nothing less. In reality, there will be days when your panels produce more electricity than you use (sunny summer days), and days when they won’t produce enough (shorter, cloudier days and nights). When this happens, net metering and net billing allow you to essentially use the grid as storage; excess energy produced by your panels transfers to the grid in exchange for credits. In times when your solar system isn’t able to meet your energy needs and you need to pull electricity from the grid, you can use these credits to compensate. In this article, we explain the difference between net metering and net billing compensation structures, different types of net metering and net billing, and where these programs are being offered across the country. Key takeaways • Net metering and net billing programs make use of overproduced electricity from home solar systems by transferring the excess energy to the grid. In exchange, you receive credits for this energy you send to the grid. • Net metering transactions are usually one-to-one, so the credits are often equal to the retail rate of electricity (aka what you pay). • Net billing credits are often equal to the wholesale rate of electricity (aka what your utility pays), which is less than the retail rate. • Utilities tend to oppose net metering programs, so alternative compensation programs are becoming increasingly popular...

Californians’ electricity bills will soon depend on their income

But California is about to challenge that basic logic, in an attempt to curb rising rates and help electrify the state’s approximately law will require its three investor-owned utilities to charge customers fees for electricity based not only on how much electricity they use, but also on how much money they make. Ronald Dawson, a retired data manager who lives in Eureka, Calif., said he and his wife have always been careful to save energy: only running the washer during off-peak hours and living without air conditioning. The new fixed charge alone, he said, would be more than his typical monthly electricity bill. “It’s a bait-and-switch,” he said. “In the last decade, electricity prices in California have skyrocketed,” said Matthew Freedman, a staff attorney for The Utility Reform Network, a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization headquartered in San Francisco. In the past 10 years, Freedman explained, non-discounted electricity rates at PG&E have increased 84 percent; SDG&E rates have gone up 137 percent. Those high prices could deter Californians who want to electrify their homes and vehicles to cut carbon emissions. In general, switching out gas heating for an electric heat pump or a gas-powered car for an electric car saves money and helps the planet. But high electricity prices change the calculus. In some cases, people who electrify their homes might end up paying more. The California Public Utilities Commission, which regulates private utilities in the state, hasn...

Understanding and Calculating Electricity & Gas Bill Charges

Understanding How to Read and Calculate Your Electricity and Natural Gas Bills Fully understanding the energy charges and fees on your electric or natural gas bills each month is an important part of keeping your energy budget under control. When reading your electricity bill or natural gas bill, you might wonder what the electricity or natural gas supply charges are about, what a kWh is, how they’re calculated, or you might be having other problems understanding your energy bills. Constellation wants to help you manage your energy expenses by teaching you about energy costs and how power usage might affect your overall monthly bill. • Electricity Cost: On your bill (or this sample electric bill), you will see a listing of the amount of electricity your home used for the month, listed in kilowatt-hours, or kWh. You have control over this portion of your bill in two ways. First, you can work to cut home energy charges by • Capacity Cost: Another important fee to understand on your electric bill is capacity cost. This fee, usually incurred by commercial customers, ensures that the electric utility has enough capacity available to cover the total power use demand of their customers. While you don’t get much input on how this rate is assessed, you can do your part to help lower these costs for all users by using major appliances and machinery during off-peak times and reducing your energy consumption during peak hours. Peak hours vary by location and season, so • Utility Deliv...
