Field Marshal KM Cariappa, The Legend Who Made The Army Truly Indian

Kodandera Madappa Cariappa is a man known for many firsts, but he is best remembered as the legend who made the Indian Army truly Indian. Perhaps this is why General Bipin Rawat, the current Indian Army chief, feels that the time has come to honour the late Field Marshal with the Bharat Ratna award. Interestingly, till date, no military person has ever been awarded the Bharat Ratna,India’s highest civilian award that is awarded in any “field of human endeavour”. Despite being one of Indian Army’s most decorated generals, few Indians know about the legendary Field Marshal whose unrelenting patriotism and courage blazed a trail in the Indian Armed Forces. So here’s the fascinating story of KM Cariappa, a man whowould invariably occupy the top spot if one wereto count the most distinguished soldiers of India. KM Cariappa Born on January 28, 1899, Cariappa was one of six children of an official in the British colonial administration of India. He spent his childhood in Coorg, a beautiful district of Karnataka known for contributing many soldiers to the army and grew up listening to stories of valour of World War I veterans. It was not long before young ‘Chimma’ (as Cariappa was called by his family and close friends) was dreaming of becoming an officer himself. After completing his education at Central High School at Madikeri, he joined Presidency College in Madras for higher education. It was here that he learnt that Indians were being recruited into the Army as officers and th...

FIRST FIELD MARSHAL

JAI HIND. In this blog I shall talk about a very prominent personality of the Indian Armed Forces- First Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. PROMOTION TO FIELD MARSHAL After the war, Gandhi decided to promote Manekshaw to the rank of field marshal and appoint him as the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS). However, after several objections from the commanders of the navy and the air force, the appointment was dropped. It was felt that, because Manekshaw was from the army, the comparatively smaller forces of the navy and air force would be neglected. Moreover, bureaucrats felt that it might challenge their influence over defence issues. Though Manekshaw was to retire in June 1972, his term was extended by a period of six months, and “in recognition of outstanding services to the Armed Forces and the nation,” he was promoted to the rank of field marshal on 1 January 1973.The first Indian Army officer to be so promoted, he was formally conferred with the rank in a ceremony held at HONOURS For his service to the Indian nation, the

Field Marshal KM Cariappa, so much more than just the first Indian Army chief

Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa was instrumental in keeping the Indian Army away from politics and attempted to forge an all-inclusive army. New Delhi: Popular discourse on Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa is often limited to placing him as the first ‘Indian’ commander-in-chief of the Indian Army who took over from Roy Butcher on 15 January, 1949, and the second person to have been conferred the rank of Field Marshal in 1986 after former Army chief Sam Manekshaw. There are, however, countless other factors that make him a towering figure in the history of Indian military, all of which is still relevant and important on his 120th birth anniversary, which falls today, 28 January. Field Marshal Cariappa was not only instrumental in drawing a strong dividing line between the Indian Army and politics but he also helped shape the Army into a highly professional force in its formative stage. He attempted to do away with caste, creed and other barriers in the Indian Army by raising the Brigade of The Guards — a mechanised infantry regiment of the Indian Army — in 1949. Recruitment to it was open to all regions, castes, creeds and all sections of society. Military historian and national security analyst Mandeep Singh Bajwa says that such was his stature, that Field Marshal Cariappa interacted directly with then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, not allowing anyone in the bureaucracy or others in the corridors of power to take liberties with him. “But the crucial fact i...
