Dme Traffic Halted Briefly, Dm Says No Closure Order

GHAZIABAD: The Ghaziabad traffic police on Thursday briefly halted traffic movement on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway to facilitate kanwar pilgrims. The district administration, however, said the police have been directed to ‘regulate’ the traffic and not to close any lane for commuters. The district magistrate of Ghaziabad, Rakesh Kumar Singh, said from Wednesday evening, the number of kanwar pilgrims coming from Meerut has increased. “Due to this, slow traffic movement was witnessed on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. I have asked the traffic police to regulate traffic on the stretch for both commuters and kanwar pilgrims. There is no order to close any lane of DME,” he added. The traffic movement was stopped near Dasna on the DME. Ramanand Kushwaha, SP (traffic) Ghaziabad, said only light vehicles are allowed to ply on the DME during Kanwar yatra. “The Delhi-Meerut Expressway is an important route which connects the national capital to Meerut. We received information from our counterpart in Meerut that there was heavy traffic pressure on that side on Thursday. We briefly halted the traffic going towards Meerut and then released them when the situation normalised. The DME loops also converge at the kanwar route on the Meerut side, which leads to a difficult situation there,” he added. The police also diverted some Meerut-bound vehicles to Hapur to shed the traffic pressure. The officials said similar enforcement may be carried out in future if required.

It's official: Rs 20,000 fine for vehicles banned on Delhi

GHAZIABAD: The city's traffic police have begun cracking down on owners of vehicles that are banned on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, invoking a section of the Motor Vehicles Act that inflates the fine amount to Rs 20,000 instead of the existing Rs 1,000 till now. This jump, the Ghaziabad traffic police said, was the "only way" to stop two-wheelers and three-wheelers from getting on the expressway, which has seen a spate of fatal accidents over the past few weeks. Less than two weeks back, an 18-year-old woman, a 5-year-old girl and her mother were killed after their motorcycle collided with a vehicle on the DME portion near Nahal village of the district. It appeared the rider was driving on the wrong side after missing an exit on the expressway. Between Friday and Sunday evening, traffic police had issued 430 challans and seized 16 autorickshaws for carrying passengers more than a vehicle's capacity on the "no entry zone". Six teams were deployed on all entry/exit points of the high-speed corridor to ensure enforcement of rules and issue a hefty penalty. Police said they invoked sections 115 (power to restrict the use of vehicles) and 194 (driving vehicle exceeding permissible weight) or the Motor Vehicles Act to issue the Rs 20,000 fines. "The new challan rate was started from Friday night only. On the first night, we had issued 90 challans to riders on two-wheelers and drivers of three-wheelers. Till Sunday evening, a total of 430 challans were issued, and 16 autos seized...
