He was acquitted on six other counts. Jindra, 29, and defense attorney Aaron Morrison bowed their heads as U.S. District Judge Donovan Frank read the verdict. Neither commented afterward. "Ty Jindra failed to uphold his oath as a peace officer; he failed the community he was sworn to serve, and he failed his fellow officers" Acting U.S. Attorney W. Anders Folk said in a statement. Jindra was convicted of stealing Tramadol, a controlled substance, during one stop, surreptitiously diverting pills for his own use, then failing to mention he'd discovered them when he filed a report. He was also convicted of keeping a portion of some methamphetamine that a Minneapolis resident found in a bag on her home's roof. Jindra then filed a false report with the department. Leonard Jindra was born near Prague, Czechoslovakia in June 1921. He had two brothers and an adopted sister. He was raised on a farm and attended school until his father died when Jindra was 16 years of age. His farm experience would pay dividends in combat as he could advise his outfit on how European farms were oriented and potential German defense locations. Jindra had relatives in the United States who returned to Czechoslovakia for visits. They brought along American cowboy comic books. The comics impressed Jindra and he became interested in going to the United States. He prioritized those efforts when he saw Hitler [Annotator's Note: German dictator Adolf Hitler] increase his power. It took two years for him to successfully enter the United States in June 1938. He had managed to pass the tough examination requiring a knowledge of the geography and history of the United States. He arrived in New York City [Annotator's Note: New York, New York] as a legal immigrant within the established quota requirements. Jindra stayed with relatives and worked in the daytime and attended school at night. After working one year in a leather factory, he moved on to a job as a restaurant busboy. Following that, he took on employment in a jewelry store. It was while lifting a heavy store front glass window that he ruptured himself and had a hernia. Leonard Jindra was listening to a radio broadcast by Walter Winchell [Annotator's Note: Walter Winchell, American newspaper columnist and ra...

Former Minneapolis police officer Ty Jindra admits drug use, pleads for mercy as he awaits sentence

Facing sentencing, convicted former Minneapolis police officer Ty Jindra now is admitting that he did in fact take and use drugs from people he pulled over in traffic stops. "I am ashamed and feel extreme guilt for abusing my position to take pills from those I encountered on the street, and I admit to committing the crimes I have been convicted of," Jindra said, according to a court document filed Wednesday in advance of his sentencing. However, the U.S. Attorney's Office responded in its own memorandum Thursday that Jindra is only admitting his guilt in an attempt to gain leniency. "The court should give little or no weight to Jindra's conveniently timed expressions of contrition," Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle E. Jones wrote in the memorandum. A date for sentencing has not yet been set by U.S. District Judge Donovan Frank, who presided at Jindra's nine-day trial last fall. The U.S. Attorney is seeking a sentence of three years and five months, at the top of the advisory sentencing guidelines range. Defense attorney Aaron Morrison asked for a shorter sentence, saying Jindra has learned from his mistakes and will carry the message of sobriety to other first responders and military veterans like himself. A federal jury in St. Paul on Nov. 2 found Jindra guilty on three counts of confiscating drugs during traffic stops for his own personal use, and two counts of seizing drugs in violation of an individual's constitutional rights. He was acquitted on six other counts. Def...
