Carey McLeod sweeps 2023 NCAA long jump titles, Wayne Pinnock runner

AUSTIN – No. 1 Arkansas scored 21 points on the first day of the NCAA Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium and the bulk of points were scored from a fantastic 1-2 finish in the long jump by Carey McLeod and Wayne Pinnock. With six of 21 finals contested on the first day, the Razorbacks lead team scoring with 21 points and are followed by Stanford and Arizona with 18 each. The top five also currently includes LSU (15) and Harvard (13). The only other 1-2 finish by teammates in the history of the men’s long jump at the NCAA Division Outdoor meet was in 2017 by the Florida pair of KeAndre Bates and Grant Holloway. The previous best finish for the Razorbacks was first and third in 1984 by Mike Conley and Mike Davis. McLeod, who claimed the 2023 NCAA Indoor title on his sixth and last jump, produced a winning mark of 27-1.25 (8.26) in the opening round as he equaled the facility record set by Steffin McCarter of Texas in 2021. Pinnock, the defending champion, followed with a 26-9 (8.15) for silver. Kentucky’s Jordan Turner challenged Pinnock with a 26-8.25 (8.13) effort for bronze. McLeod is the sixth Razorback to win a NCAA Outdoor long jump and he claimed Arkansas’ 10 title as Pinnock collected the program’s sixth silver medal. The pair of All-America honors brings the Razorbacks total to 31 in the event. It’s the first NCAA Outdoor long jump title for Arkansas since Jarrion Lawson in 2016. With 18 points in the long jump, three more were scored by a seventh place for Jorda...

What are the rules of long jump?

Track and Pit The sport of long jump features a track runway measuring 40 meters in length. Attached to the end of the runway is a sandpit that the athletes jump into. The sandpit varies in length and is usually three meters wide. Placed on the runway a few meters from the sandpit is the takeoff board, or foul line. The takeoff board must be 20 centimeters in length and clearly marked on the runway so the athletes can visualize the foul line. Long Jump Uniform Long jumpers wear the classic track uniform of tight and lightweight clothes. The uniform is designed not to alter an athlete’s jump in any way. Long jumpers wear specially designed shoes with thicker soles and spiked bottoms. The long jump shoe has a curved toe with spikes to help an athlete generate speed. In addition, the heel of a long jump shoe is flat to support the pressure from the plant step. The World Athletics governing body regulates that shoes can have a maximum sole thickness of 13 millimeters. Competitions The winner of a long jump competition is decided by which athlete records the farthest jump. There are a few rules in place to ensure the competition is fair and equal. First and most importantly, an athlete must begin their jump before the foul line. If any part of their foot crosses the front end of the foul line, the jump will not be recorded. Crossing the foul line is called a scratch. In each round of competition, athletes are given three attempts to record the longest jump possible. Scratching ...

Paris Diamond League 2023: Watch live streaming and telecast in India

Indian long jumper Murali Sreeshankar, a Commonwealth Games 2022 silver medallist, will compete at the Paris Diamond League 2023 in France on Saturday. The Paris Diamond League events will be live streamed in India. The Diamond League is an annual series of top-tier track and field competitions organised by World Athletics. The competition in Paris will be the fourth leg of the 2023 Diamond League season. The Diamond League Final will be held in Eugene, USA, on September 16 and 17. It will be Murali Sreeshankar’s second Diamond League appearance. On his debut in Monaco last year, he finished sixth with a jump of 7.94 metres. The 24-year-old Murali Sreeshankar comes into the Paris Diamond League on the back of a good start this season. He won a World Athletics Continental Tour bronze label event in Kallithea, Greece last month with his season-best jump of 8.18m and made the cut for the upcoming Asian Games in China. Earlier, Sreeshankar won gold medals at the third Indian Grand Prix in March and at the MVA High-Performance athletics meet (USA) in May with jumps of 7.94m and 8.29m (wind-assisted), respectively. At the Paris Diamond League, Sreeshankar will look to breach the entry standard for world championships set at 8.25m. Since Sreeshankar’s effort of 8.29m in the USA was wind-assisted, it did not help him qualify for the World Athletics Championships, to be held in Budapest in August. Sreeshankar’s personal best is 8.36m. The national record of 8.42m belongs to Jeswin ...
