The second edition of the IPL-modelled Champions Boat League (CBL) will be held from September 4 to November 26 across five districts in Kerala, Tourism Minister P A Mohamed Riyas said on Saturday. The inaugural leg of the snake-boat races will be held at Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha alongside the iconic Nehru Trophy Boat Race on September 4, the minister announced at a curtain-raiser event held in Kochi on Saturday. Concluding with the famed President's Trophy in Kollam on November 26, CBL-2 is being organised by Kerala Tourism as consecutive weekend events after the inaugural at the sprawling Punnamada Lake, 50 km south of Kochi. CBL-2, like its first edition held in 2019 on the lines of Indian Premier League in cricket, will have half of its legs in Alappuzha district, two each in Kollam and Ernakulam districts and one each in Thrissur and Kottayam districts. The venues in Alappuzha will be Pulinkunnu, Kainakary, Karuvatta, Pandanadu (Chengannur) and Kayamkulam, besides the district headquarter city. Piravom and Marine Drive will be the venues in Ernakulam, while Kollam town and Kallada will be those in Kollam district. Thazhathangadi (Kottayam) and Kottapuram (near Kodungallur in Thrissur district) are the other venues. Alappuzha all set for Nehru Trophy boat race

Alappuzha: The Nehru Trophy boat race is back! Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the 68th edition of the Nehru Trophy boat race at Punnamada Lake in the Alappuzha district on Sunday, September 4. Twenty snake boats will compete for the coveted trophy and the heats will start at 11 am. There would be competitions in nine categories for which 79 boats, including 22 snake boats (chundan vallams), had registered. However, two snake boats later withdrew from the contest, bringing down the number of competitors to 20. In between the heats, the Chief Minister will conduct the formal inauguration of the water festival at 2.30 pm. Ministers K N Balagopal, K Rajan, P Prasad, P A Muhammad Rias and Roshy Augustine will be present at the ceremony. After the inaugural function, the competitions will resume by 3 pm and the final race is scheduled at 5 pm. Tickets for the race are available online as well as offline. While the online sales are conducted through the South Indian Bank website, Ticketgenie and Paytm Insider, offline tickets are sold from various government offices. Nehru Trophy Boat Race on September 4

The 68th edition of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race (NTBR) is likely to be held on September 4. A meeting of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race Society held here on Monday decided to suggest the date to the government. P.P. Chitharanjan, MLA, said the date would be finalised after getting approval from the Tourism Department. Mr. Chitharanjan said the race would be conducted on full scale. The NTBR will also be the first race of this year's Champions Boat League (CBL). The NTBR and the CBL will be held after a pandemic-induced gap of two years. The race was last held on August 31, 2019. H. Salam, MLA, Alappuzha district panchayat president K.G. Rajeshwari, Alappuzha municipal chairperson Soumya Raj, Tourism director V.R. Krishna Teja, representatives of boats and boat clubs, and others attended the meeting.

Pallathuruthy Boat Club wins Nehru trophy

In an atmosphere filled with fun, cheer and sheer elation, Mahadevikadu Kattil Thekkethil Chundan (snakeboat) rowed by members of the Pallathuruthy Boat Club (PBC) won the 68th edition of the The PBC, captained by Santhosh Chakko, emerged victorious in a nail-biting finish, clocking 4.30.77 minutes. With this, the club completed a hat-trick of Nehru trophy titles named after the first Prime Minister of India. They lifted the trophy in 2018 and 2019 rowing Payippadan Chundan and Nadubhagom Chundan respectively. At the same time, it is the maiden Nehru trophy for the Mahadevikadu Kattil Thekkethil Chundan. Nadubhagom Chundan rowed by the NCDC Boat Club Kumarakom finished second. Veeyapuram Chundan (Punnamada Boat Club) and Champakulam Chundan (Police Boat Club, Alappuzha) finished in third and fourth places. One of the most exciting events to be held in Lake in Appleppey is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, which is a yearly competitive boating event held on the second Saturday of every August, during the Onam festival. The most popular event is the Snake Boat Race, which is a thrilling event to watch as well as participate in. 100-120 feet long canoe-like boats make serpentine movements through the water, thereby popularising the name. Other categories of boats which participate in various events of the race are Churulan Vallam, Iruttukuthy Vallam, Odi Vallam, Veppu Vallam (Vaipu Vallam), Vadakkanody Vallam and Kochu Vallam. Supposedly when Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru came to see the event, he got so involved in the competition that he jumped in one of the boats which later won the race.
