Sant Kabir—Life and Works of the Mystical Saint Poet

How Kabir Became a Disciple of Ramananda The boy Kabir, in whom the religious passion was innate, saw in Ramananda his destined teacher; but knew the chances were slight that a Hindu guru would accept a Muslim as a disciple. He, therefore, hid on the steps of the Ganges River, where Ramananda came to bathe often; with the result that the master, coming down to the water, trod upon his body unexpectedly, and exclaimed in his astonishment, "Ram! Ram!"—the name of the incarnation under which he worshiped God. Kabir then declared that he had received the mantra of initiation from Ramananda's lips, which admitted him to discipleship. In spite of the protests of orthodox Brahmins and Muslims, both equally annoyed by this contempt of theological landmarks, he persisted in his claim. Ramananda's Influence on Kabir's Life and Works Ramananda appears to have accepted Kabir, and though Muslim legends speak of the famous Sufi Pir, Takki of Jhansi, as Kabir's master in later life, the Hindu saint is the only human teacher to whom he acknowledges indebtedness in his songs. Ramananda, Kabir's guru, was a man of wide religious culture who dreamed of reconciling this intense and personal Mohammedan mysticism with the traditional theology of Kabir's Songs Are His Greatest Teachings It is by his wonderful songs, the spontaneous expressions of his vision and his love, and not by the didactic teachings associated with his name, that Kabir makes his immortal appeal to the heart. In these poems,...

SANT GURU KABIR JAYANTI

Sant Kabir Jayanti is celebrated in India at the full moon in the Hindu month of Jyeshtha, between May and June, on the Gregorian Calendar. This year, it falls on June 4. Jayanti means birth anniversary, and Sant Kabir Das was an Indian mystic poet and religious figure who lived in the 15th century. Sant Kabir Jayanti is a special day dedicated to honoring him, his works, and his enduring legacy. History of Sant Guru Kabir Jayanti Kabir Saheb was born in 1398 in the city of Varanasi in Uttar Prades on the day of the full moon in the Hindu month Jyeshthah. Raised by a family of weavers, he lived on to become a great mystic poet, persecuted for his work by Muslims and Hindus, who tried to claim him as their own upon his death. Unlike other Gurus and Saints of the time, Kabir lived simply as a weaver. He got married and had children. Kabir’s poems are mainly recorded in Hindi. They reveal different aspects of life and call for devotion to God. Kabir was often critical of certain religious practices, causing controversy during his lifetime. In 1495, Sant Kabir was forced into exile when Emperor Sikandar Lodi charged him with the possession of divine powers. He died in Maghar near Gorakhpur in 1518. Sant Kabir’s legacy has done more than survive, it has thrived. Following in his footsteps is the Path of Kabir, a religious community that acclaims him its founder and one of its sages. Known as Panthis, membership of the group burgeoned to about 9.6 million people over the sevente...

Opinion: Sant Kabir died 500 years ago, India is still fighting over religious identities

India is celebrating the completion of 500 years of Sant Kabir's life. The poet-saint died in 1518 upon living an extraordinary life. His life was the stuff of legends. But that is not the only reason to remember and celebrate Sant Kabir today. Rather, Kabir's contemporary relevance stems from the observations he made on questions of communal harmony and social justice. In a world tarnished by aggressive religious contestations and political violence, it is imperative that we remember Sant Kabir's life and work more than ever before. Kabir had a syncretic upbringing. An abandoned child, Kabir had possible Brahmin antecedents but was brought up in a Muslim weaver’s family. Later in life, Kabir became a well-known bhakti-saint of iconoclastic ideas, challenging social hierarchies and religious hypocrisies, particularly, in the political context of the Lodi-Afghan Sultanate. His teachings called for a peaceful coexistence of different religious groups – even if they put pressure on each other to gain followers and converts. Several strands of medieval bhakti movements, led by devotional poets and reformers from marginal sections of society, condemned religious rituals, criticised caste or jati-based hierarchies and discrimination. Instead, these Bhakti saints advocated the need to discover Ram, a formless God, inside one’s heart. However, within the same Bhakti movement, some traditions refused to acknowledge any Hindu religious movements that revolved around Sri Ram of Ayodh...
